The way we do everything is changing due to COVID-19. Things that we never thought twice about are now a little worrisome, as we do not want to spread germs that could potentially infect other people. Just like blowing out candles on a birthday cake, a simple activity that has been done for decades is now questionable. This is especially true for little kids who do not always have the cleanest ‘blows’ possible, they tend to get droplets everywhere. Before COVID-19, we just ate the cake, but now it can make everyone cringe.

That is why there is now an invention called “cake shields” to help us with this problem. According to Today, it was created by Billy Kaye, a dentist in Florida. He wanted to find a way to make sure that everyone could blow out their birthday candles and eat the cake safely.

Billy says that this has always been on his mind, even before the pandemic started. He would think about how germs are spread by the simple act of blowing out birthday candles. Now that the need is very apparent, he started to work on a prototype.

It didn’t take him very long to come up with a prototype that would work, and by April of 2020, he had come up with the ‘Top It Cake Shield,’ and now this product is getting ready to be launched online on September 15th. There are three different sizes available. There is one for quarter-sheet cakes, round cakes, and even individual slices. The polystyrene cover connects around the cake so that it is completely covered.

There are slots on the top for someone to put a candle in it, so while someone makes their wish and blows out their candle, the cake is completely covered. This sounds like the perfect idea for any little kid’s birthday, as we all know they like to get a close-up look at the sweet treat that is coming their way. Priced at only $4.99 for the individual slice cover and $14.99 for the full cake cover, it is a small price to pay to keep everyone safe.
