Singer and actress Demi Lovato have recently returned to the spotlight after taking more than a year off following an apparent overdose in 2018. Not only did she deliver an incredibly powerful and moving performance of her new song Anyone at the Grammy Awards but she also fulfilled a long time dream of hers to sing the National Anthem at the Superbowl. Fans were thrilled to see Lovato back in the spotlight, focusing on her health and sobriety but Lovato is quick to remind people that she is also working on self-acceptance and body positivity.

In an interview with PEOPLE the singer noted that part of her recovery this time around includes embracing her body no matter what the size. “It’s a daily battle. Some days I feel great and some days I don’t feel great. And sometimes it’s periods of times,” Lovato told the magazine. “I stopped dieting and have gained a little weight so it’s been a struggle but at the same time, I’m happier because I’m not restricting myself from certain foods and I’m no longer food shaming myself.”

Lovato has been open about her disordered eating in the past and recently sat down with model Ashley Graham for her Pretty Big Deal podcast where she discussed how what she thought was recovery from her eating disorder was just an extension of it. "I'm tired of running myself into the ground with workouts and extreme dieting," Lovato explained. "I thought the past few years was recovery from an eating disorder when it actually was just completely falling into it." She went on to add that "I just realized that maybe my symptoms weren’t as obvious as before, but it was definitely an eating issue," she continued. "I think when you have certain people around you that are telling you certain things that you should look a certain way, it makes it harder."

"I honestly think that’s what led to everything happening over the past year was just me thinking I found recovery when I didn’t, and then living this lie and trying to tell the world I was happy with myself when I really wasn’t," she said. The singer has been opening up about her struggles with body acceptance on social media, posting a tweet in January where she told fans that she is "No longer depriving myself of treats (in moderation) and I’m not gonna lie, I put on a couple lbs since I’ve given up dieting BUT I’ve given up the chronic stress of what I eat because I don’t want to set that example for my fans. No more food shaming myself!!"

She also posted an unedited bikini photo back in September that she wrote was her "biggest fear," adding that " I want this new chapter in my life to be about being authentic to who I am rather than trying to meet someone else’s standards."

Lovato explained during her conversation with Graham that she asked herself who she wanted to be during the release of her new album after working on a song she called an 'anthem' for body positivity. "When I go into the next chapter of my career, what do I want it to be?" she said. "I've always done the sexy route, I've never really done the whole feeling comfortable in yourself." We love that Lovato is happy and healthy and embracing her gorgeous body no matter what size it is. She looks stunning and her recent performances have been so amazing that her fans can't wait to hear more new music from her. You can watch Lovato's full interview below.
