There’s a new report that suggests moms do get less sleeps than fathers, especially when there are little children at home.
According to a study presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s 69th annual meeting in Boston, women are sleeping less and less each year. The reason behind this is simple: it’s because moms usually carry the most burden when it comes to taking care of the family, the children, and all of the household chores. With so much to do each day, it’s no wonder that they sleep less than their spouses.
“Our study found not only are they not sleeping long enough, they also report feeling tired throughout the day,” said study author Kelly Sullivan, PhD, and member of the American Academy of Neurology.
Over 5,806 members, both men and women, participated in the research. The team of researchers involved in the study found that more than half of women under the age of 45 are sleep deprived. The study also concluded that with each additional child in the family, the odds of a mother suffering from insufficient sleep almost doubled.
The study is troubling for many, as it doesn’t seem as a mom’s job is getting any easier. A study from Duke University found that poor sleep is “associated with greater psychological distress and higher levels of biomarkers associated with elevated risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes.” These two factors are more associated with women than men, too.
For moms who feel sleep deprived, there are several things they can do to ensure more shut eye at night. Getting the entire family on the same sleep schedule (by making sure everyone goes to bed on time and wake up at about the same time each morning) is one way of maximizing your time in bed. Also, try and keep screen time to a minimum. Many studies have suggested that the glaring blue lights from our electronic tablets, smart phones and even the television screen makes it harder for our brains and bodies to shut down at night.
In addition, moms are encouraged to practice a relaxing bedtime routine that might include a warm bath, meditation, or even doing something low-key like reading a book. If you are still having trouble sleeping at night, avoid naps, exercise daily or evaluate your bedroom. Sometimes a change in pillows, comforters or even getting a new, comfortable mattress might help you reach a dream-like state sooner each night.
