The Chicago Cubs gave a signed baseball to a child after social media became outraged over the perceived wrongdoing of an adult fan. But according to new reports, the media only managed to catch half of the story.

A video has gone viral of a man catching a foul ball right next to a child in the stands. The child, however, missed the ball and it rolled behind him. That’s when videos showed an adult snatch it up, seemingly taking the ball away from the child. The man triumphantly showed the ball to his female companion and soon enough the clip went viral, with many people on social media commenting in anger over what looked like a moment of injustice.

A lot of people took to their Twitter and Facebook accounts to gripe over what had happened. Many pointed out that the man looked overly selfish for grabbing a ball from a young boy and giving it to his female companion rather than to him. After all, it’s every little boy’s dream to catch a foul ball at a professional baseball game. Many people lashed out at the man, calling him indecent. Others suggested that he might have had a child at home that wanted the ball.

But apparently, that’s not exactly what had happened.

According to the Chicago Tribune, while the little boy at Wrigley Field appeared to be dejected at first, he actually walked out of the stadium that night with not one but two baseballs. Unfortunately, those who heavily criticized the man for his actions in the video may have rushed to their judgment. The man who grabbed the ball on the widely seen video had actually already helped the little boy get a ball earlier.

One person who witnessed to entire ordeal go down wrote on Twitter, “I was sitting next to this guy. That ball was between my feet. The kid already had a ball the same guy helped him get. He handed it to his wife. She took a picture of it and they gave it to the kid next to them. This guy was great. This story is BAD.”

If that weren’t enough, the Cubs came through with yet another ball for the little guy, signed by star infielder Javier Baez.

That’s not the only good news of the night. The Cubs went on beat the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, 7-2. In other words, there was nothing to cry foul about. Everyone went home happy.
