Imagine trending higher on social media than the NBA All-Star Game itself! Well, that's what Chaka Khan, legendary 70's singer/songwriter and lead singer of the band Rufus, managed to do, right before tip off with her unique rendition of the national anthem.

Khan, along with Common and Jennifer Hudson, were among the famous Chicagoans to perform at the All-Star Game, given that the game was being played in the city.

Fans and NBA players alike seemed bewildered and amused by Khan's performance, which failed to land; talk about an airball! Twitterverse was abuzz with vicious critiques and memes, comparing Khan's unique rendering to that of former Black-Eyed-Peas singer, Fergie, who sang the anthem a couple of years ago at the same event. Americans are accustomed, if not offended (Roseanne Barr or Fergie) or entertained (Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye, Whitney Houston) by various interpretations of it. The Star-Spangled Banner is not easy to sing; fans wait with bated breath, hoping that their favorite celebrities nail it.

Viewers were not feeling the "I Feel For You," singer's rendition of the anthem. Drummer Thompson, who hadn't been watching the game, reportedly received numerous phone calls during her performance, leading him to suspect someone was doing a "weird" Star-Spangled.

Chaka Khan's vocals are unique; modeled off the riffs of horns rather than human vocal ranges. Her voice is so identifiable that her recent appearance on The Masked Singer was a bust. The judges recognized her immediately. Unfortunately, the 10-time Grammy award winner's legendary vocals, which usually has folks screaming for more, had them begging for her to please, stop singing!

However, not all reviews of Chaka's performance were bad. Magic Johnson tweeted that he and his wife Cookie were enjoying the game, and that Chaka's rendition of the anthem was "Amazing." Others have commented that they couldn't understand the fuss. Chaka was singing the way she's been singing for her entire career, like Chaka! Yet some fans of the living legend claimed that they loved her, but the riffs and runs, Khan is famous for, should not be applied to the national anthem.

Chaka's Talent Passed To Her Daughter, Milini

About 34 years ago, Chaka Khan performed at the legendary Mavericks Flat, a historic landmark, (now closed) known as the Apollo of the West. Her daughter, Indira Milini Khan took on the same feat in 2016. Indira founded Pretty in Pink, a Motown Records group, in which she co-wrote most of the group's material. Indira also played her iconic mother on Love Under New Management: The Miki Howard Story.

Indira has toured as a singer and performer in the U.S. and overseas. On travels, with her mother, she learned what a powerful impact, music can make on people's lives.

At a pre-grammy event, hosted by fellow R&B singer, Syleena Johnson, last April, Indira Khan proved she inherited her mother's musical prowess, as she sang alongside such R&B heavyweights, as Ms. Johnson, Leela James, Lalah Hathaway, Willie Taylor, and Karen Bernod. She's worked with artists ranging from Johnny Gill to Paula Abdul and she has toured with the daughters of soul icons, Nina Simone and Bill Withers, in the Daughters of Soul tour. With her stunning stage presence, undeniable vocal prowess, and of course, the spitting image of her mother, Indira Milini Khan killed the show, and proved she could hold her own.

A BETTER CHOICE?

Indira has followed her mother's footsteps in the entertainment industry, and she has been featured on some of her mother's songs. Although she identifies as an R&B singer, the younger Ms. Khan adds her personality and flair to her songs. While she may have inherited her mother's gorgeous looks and musical talent, she is a star in her own right. Her single "Bathe Me," suggests the young chanteuse is ready to step out of her mother's shadow. Perhaps, like the number 23, she wore on her customized jersey, which belonged to another famous legend, mama Khan can retire and pass the baton to Indira. She might've been a better choice for the national anthem.
