While many parents vaccinate their kids without a second thought - after all, we’ve been doing it for years and it’s helped eradicate some of the world’s most serious sicknesses - there are some parents who don’t believe its necessarily the right thing to do. The safety of vaccines was first questioned by so-called scientist Andrew Wakefield, who published research that suggested there was a correlation between vaccines and autism.
Though Wakefield’s research has since been debunked by the scientific community, it has inspired countless parents to begin questioning whether vaccines are right for their kids. And some of those parents include celebs! You might be surprise to learn which celebrities have chosen not to vaccinate their kiddos, even though in many places it's required by law to keep your children up-to-date with their shots. Regardless, many celebs have been outspoken about their controversial beliefs and aren’t afraid to advocate for what they believe is right.
10 Selma Blair
Cruel Intentions star Selma Blair became a mom for the first time when she welcomed her son, Arthur, with her ex Jason Bleick in 2011. Since then, fans have learned that the celeb appears to be anti-vaccination - and not everyone is happy with her.
Selma took to Twitter recently to advocate for parents’ right to choose whether their kiddos get vaccines or not. “Parental choice is our right. Most vaccinate. Let us choose,” she wrote.
The star received backlash for her controversial opinion and, for the most part, attempts to lay pretty low when it comes to raising her son - including take a step back from the spotlight!
9 Kristin Cavallari
The Hills star Kristin Cavallari is known for causing drama on T.V.- but her controversial opinions on vaccines have also caused drama in real life! The actress, who shares sons Camden and Jaxon and daughter Saylor with her husband, NFL star Jay Cutler, is adamant that she’s unsure of the safety of vaccines.
"There are very scary statistics out there regarding what is in vaccines and what they cause – asthma, allergies, ear infections, all kinds of things. We feel like we are making the best decision for our kids,” Kristin has shared about her and her hubby’s decision to go vaccine-free.
8 Alicia Silverstone
Clueless actress Alicia Silverstone has been making headlines over the years for her eyebrow-raising parenting advice, which has included an all-vegan diet for her son Blue and mouth-to-mouth feedings. Unsurprisingly, the eco-conscious star is also a big anti-vaccination supporter.
"While there has not been a conclusive study of the negative effects of such a rigorous one-size-fits-all, shoot-’em-up schedule, there is increasing anecdotal evidence from doctors who have gotten distressed phone calls from parents claiming their child was 'never the same' after receiving a vaccine,” she wrote in her 2014 book 'The Kind Mama'. “And I personally have friends whose babies were drastically affected in this way.”
7 Charlie Sheen
Charlie Sheen is about as controversial an actor as they come. The former Two and a Half Men star has five children - he shares daughters Sam and Lola with his ex wife Denise Richards, and twin sons Max and Bob with his other ex wife Brooke Mueller. The celeb also has an adult daughter, whom he shares with his former high school sweetheart.
In 2008, the actor made headlines when he was caught in a legal dispute with Denise over whether or not to vaccinate their kids. Charlie reportedly wrote a letter to his daughters’ doctor say he did not have his consent to give the girls the MMR vaccine, saying he believes its “poison.”
Denise later said her ex husband’s views on vaccines were one of the reasons their marriage failed. “When I vaccinated Sam, he accused me of poisoning her. And I knew when he said that that the marriage wasn't going to work," she said.
6 Kat Von D
Tattoo artist and TV personality Kat Von D became a mom in 2018 when she gave birth to her son, Leafar, with her husband, Rafael Reyes. To the surprise of many fans, the celeb hasn’t been afraid to share her controversial parenting advice since becoming a mama - including where she stands on vaccinations.
“I knew the minute we announced our pregnancy that we would be bombarded with unsolicited advice. Some good and some questionable - unsolicited none the less. I also was prepared for the backlash and criticism we would get if we decided to be open about our personal approach to our pregnancy,” she wrote online this past June.
“And, if you don’t know what it’s like to have the entire world openly criticize, judge, throw uninformed opinions, and curse you - try being an openly pregnant vegan on Instagram, having a natural, drug-free home birth in water with a midwife and doula, who has the intention of raising a vegan child, without vaccinations,” Kat continued.
5 Mayim Bialik
Mayim Bialik, who’s a mom to sons Miles and Frederick, plays the crazy-smart Amy Farrah Fowler on The Big Bang Theory. Not only does the actress’ character have a PhD on the show, but she’s also got one in real life, too! Mayim received her PhD in neuroscience from UCLA in 2007.
Despite her scientific background, the celeb has stated that she’s not confident in the science backing up vaccinations. “The number of vaccines that we received [as] kids is a third or a fourth less than kids get now. So my feeling is, you can really do whatever you want,” she has said, encouraging parents to do research and choose wisely before vaccinating their infants.
4 Jim Carrey
Jim Carrey is a proud papa to an adult daughter name Jane Carrey. While he wasn’t as outspoken when his daughter was growing up, the funny man hasn’t been afraid to share his controversial opinions on vaccinations ever since his highly public romance with famous anti-vaxxer Jenny McCarthy, whom he dated from 2005-2010.
The actor has made it clear he believes that certain vaccines can lead to autism - the same opinion his ex has held ever since her own son was diagnosed as on the spectrum. "California Gov says yes to poisoning more children with mercury and aluminum in mandatory vaccines. This corporate fascist must be stopped,” Jim wrote on Twitter this past summer. "I am not anti-vaccine. I am anti-thimerosal, anti-mercury. They have taken some of the mercury laden thimerosal out of vaccines. NOT ALL!"
3 Jenny McCarthy
Actress Jenny McCarthy has been one of the most outspoken anti-vaccine advocates in Hollywood for years. The blonde bombshell has one son Evan, born in 2002, who was diagnosed with autism when he was 3. Jenny has since made it very public that she believes vaccinations were to blame for her son’s diagnosis.
In 2011, Jenny said this about her provocative stance on vaccinations: “Since when is repeating the words of parents and recommending further investigation a crime? As I've learned, the answer is whenever someone questions the safety of any vaccines.”
She continued, “For some reason, parents aren't being told that this ‘new’ information about Dr. Wakefield isn't a medical report, but merely the allegations of a single British journalist named Brian Deer.”
2 Lisa Bonet
American actress Lisa Bonet was one of the first celebrities to speak up against vaccinations, as she’s been encouraging parents to make the decision that’s right for them since the ‘90s. The Cosby Show alum is a mom-of-three: she shares an adult daughter, Zoe Kravitz, with her ex husband Lenny Kravitz, and she also shares daughter Lola and son Nakoa-Wolf with her current husband, Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa.
On the topic of vaccines, the star has said, “[Vaccinations] introduce alien microorganisms into our children’s blood which could potentially have serious long-term effects.” As for vaccinations her kids, she added, “It’s very scary and it’s very serious, and I think because I felt wrong doing it… that’s why I didn’t do it.”
1 Kevin Gates
American rapper Kevin Gates and his wife Dreka Hayes, who married in 2015, share two children together: Islah and Khaza. During an interview with Rolling Stone, he shared that the parents didn’t vaccinate their children, which he claims is the reason for their kids’ success.
"I know why she’s so accelerated. She’s never been vaccinated before,” he said in reference to their three-year old daughter. "That’s why she’s so accelerated, she doesn’t have mercury in her body or things to that nature.”
