Pregnancy can be a joyous time for a woman, and her partner. The excitement increasingly builds as the due date nears – and so does the size of a woman’s belly. A woman who was average weight before getting pregnant can gain anywhere from 25 to 35 pounds.
Her body will undergo many changes, including possible morning sickness, back pains, and eventually, the pain that comes with delivering. All of those things are experienced only by the woman, right? So it’s her partner’s duty to be kind, gentle and understanding – after all, she’s going to be the mother of their child.
It’s a huge sacrifice women make to be pregnant! So this one woman must think her boyfriend owes her big time for getting pregnant, because she asked for a huge favor.
A pregnant gal’s boyfriend posted on Reddit seeking advice because his girlfriend asked him to gain weight with her throughout her pregnancy so she wasn’t gaining all the weight alone.
"Just last week my girlfriend found out that she’s pregnant," Reddit user Glutenfreejk wrote. "We are both gym rats and run and lift a lot but her question to me was startling. She asked me that while she’s pregnant to get fat with her. I really don’t want to lose my body but I am just so unsure about this. Anyone got tips?"
First of all, it’s truly a myth that a woman will “get fat” during a pregnancy. Someone who is fit and exercises regularly can likely do the same during pregnancy. Also, the myth of “eating for two” is just that – a myth.
As Reddit user Girlddadea explains, she won’t gain fat. “She will gain baby (plus placenta and fluid)! I gained a total of 10kg while pregnant. To be fair I delivered early at 35 weeks. By the time I left the hospital I was wearing pre-pregnancy jeans and was only 2.5kg heavier than before I fell pregnant. My suggestion would to be help her maintain her healthy lifestyle by eating correctly and to continue exercising (obviously some things will have to altered) and she shouldn’t gain too much other than baby weight.”
Secondly, should her boyfriend consider this odd request?
Norrive says, “For a lot of couples the dad gains weight with his pregnant woman by accident anyway, but encouraging it is really a bad idea especially looking at the lack of time and stress a baby brings. Losing weight will drop down the priority list and that’s even more stupid if the weight was gained on purpose and completely unnecessary.”
Perhaps the best thing this dad-to-be can do for his pregnant girlfriend is to eat healthy with her, continue to exercise together, and reassure her that she looks beautiful during and after pregnancy.
