Who says you have to be a grown up to be a fashionista? Certainly not Blue Ivy. Since 2016 when this young diva in the making accompanied her multi-talented mom, Beyoncé to the VMA’s, the world of fashion has noted her as a trendsetter for kids. Despite how many heads Blue Ivy has managed to turn, she can't take the credit and neither can her mom. Instead, it's her personal stylist, Manuel A. Mendez. Since Blue Ivy was born, Mendez has been tasked with making sure that the little girl's look was on point.

Unlike the Carters, most parents can't afford a personal stylist for their little ones but Mendez has some helpful pointers for parents who want their kids to look their best. “The first thing you decide is ‘what is the baby going to wear that day?’ That’s when I started getting creative and putting little looks together,” Mendez advises.

In addition to being a stylists to the children on stars, Mendez also helps to pick out the looks for Kidpik which is a monthly clothing box for girls that doesn't require a subscription. When advising Kidpik on what to put in their boxes, he looks to women's fashion to get his ideas and just makes smaller versions of what he sees on the runway. He just makes sure to keep it age appropriate, fun and easy for the average kid to run around in and play.

Wondering what are some of the hottest kid trends for the year 2020? Mendez talks about four of the most popular ones that are featured in the Kidpik boxes he created for the holidays.

1. Mixed prints

Who doesn't love a print? Prints are versatile and fun. There are also tons of prints to choose from and unlike the matchy match days of the past, it's completely acceptable to match one print on the bottom with a completely different print on the top. “I might do striped pants with a flower top and then a cardigan to tone it down.” Mendez says. Ever since The Lion King released, animal prints have become insanely popular and are a great way to incorporate prints into your child's wardrobe.

2. Pops of neon

Neon colors are resurfacing as popular clothing items for adults and for kids too. When it comes to neons, you can't wear too bright of a color either. Everyone has colors that they're drawn to and if you're looking for some inspiration from an expert, Mendez shared his favorite shades: “A touch of lime green or orange or bright yellow.” Just like with the prints, your pops of neon can be mixed and matched as well.

3. Geometric shapes

Geometric shapes were big in 2019, and that’s going to keep going into 2020,” says Mendez. You can opt for a simple dress with a geometric pattern or you can get creative. The bolder the better. You can pair a patterned shirt with a simple pair of jeans or leggings but don't be afraid to mix a triangle-printed top with a pair of striped pants either.

4. Color-blocking

You can never go wrong with solids. Solids are staple wardrobe items that can go with any and everything. They can also be worn with just about any of the other styles listed but with other solid colors as well. "Fiesta, party colors are in—bright yellow, red, sorbet colors," Mendez says. Kids love colors and figuring out which colors they like most together will make a fun game for them. You don't have to micromanage your child, but when it comes to color-blocking, you can advise them to pick colors that aren't too similar to each other for the best look.

Perhaps the best thing about these new fashion trends is that they encourage kids to be bold and creative. Parents used to cringe when their children, dead set on being independent and dressing themselves came out of their bedrooms in outrageous outfits but now these outrageous outfits can be embraced as trendy. This new freedom will give your kids a newfound sense of confidence and may potentially save you that hour long conversation about why your child can't wear whatever outfit they picked outside of the house.
