Naming a baby isn't easy. People spend months scouring the internet and baby name books, making lists of their favorites, turning to friends and family to run names by them or ask for ideas. You can find inspiration for baby names pretty much anywhere, too. Nature, geography, family history, pop culture - so many great baby names have come from those sources of inspiration. Some people look to their favorite celebrities for inspiration, either using their names or a variation of their name. And the thing about baby names is that they're very much a matter of personal preference! One person's perfect name is someone else's never in a million years name. We can't help but think this is the case with the recent surge of popularity for a couple of very unique yet undoubtedly controversial names.

Website AreaVibes did an analysis of data obtained from the Social Security Administration, and found that the names Ivanka and Melania have surged in popularity since 2015. The name Melania is up 227%, and Ivanka is up a staggering 362%. Now, it's not terribly uncommon for the names of the First Family to become popular while they're in office.

For example, a review of data from the Social Security Administration revealed that the names Sasha and Malia also increased in popularity while the Obama family was in the White House. What's surprising about the popularity of Ivanka and Melania as names is that people are choosing them despite the animosity and controversy that surrounds the family.

Interestingly enough, Ivanka and Melania seem to be the only names associated with the Trump family that people are liking (with the exception of Barron, which jumped in popularity by 90%). The name Donald is down 11%, Eric is down 6%, and poor Tiffany can't even catch a break with her name. Tiffany, once one of the most popular names in the country, has declined in popularity by 16%. It's interesting how some Trump names are appealing, but others seem to be off the table when it comes to baby names.

We can certainly see the appeal of naming a child after the First Daughter or First Lady. But it seems a little shortsighted to choose these names at this point, given the potential for scandal that seems to grow by the day.
