This Is Why Royal Baby Archie Harrison Is Called 'Master' And Not 'Prince'

If you thought Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's infant son went by Prince Archie Harrison, you would be incorrect. The newest member of the royal family has the title Master, not Prince.

This little detail stands out as odd, especially since all of Archie's boy cousins are princes. The reason behind it goes back a proclamation issued by King George V back in 1917. King George made it so that only a limited number of royal family members could use a royal title. His announcement stated:

The grandchildren of the sons of any such Sovereign in the direct male line (save only the eldest living son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales) shall have and enjoy in all occasions the style and title enjoyed by the children of Dukes of these Our Realms.

Here is what that means: Only certain royals can use the title Prince of Princess. First, we have the children of the sovereign. This includes Prince Charles, Prince Edward, and Princess Anne. Next, we have the children of the sovereign's sons, who are Prince Harry and Prince William. Lastly, there is the eldest son of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales. This is Prince George.

Here's the catch: Direct male line. "Direct male line" travels from the first-born male to the first-born male. Since Prince Harry is the second born male, his children cannot use the titles Prince of Princess. Therefore, Archie Harrison uses the title Master.

Master Archie Harrison is seventh in line for the throne, the first Master after six Princes. Master is a title any young boy uses formally. It is interesting how someone with the same title as any young boy's name on a wedding invitation reads holds so much power!

One of Prince Harry's titles is the Earl of Dumbarton, and he and Meghan Markle could have passed this title along to Archie if they had wanted to. They also could have asked the Queen herself to pass a proclamation allowing Archie to be a Prince. Her Royal Highness actually offered this option to Princess Anne, who declined.

Apparently, Meghan and Harry were fine with Master Archie Harrison. And we are too!
