In addition to being a wonderful actress and activist, Angelina Jolie is known for adopting children from all over the world. Parenting adopted children has been one of the biggest life lessons that she has ever had, she recently shared. Being an adopted mother is not always easy, but she has embraced every second of it and has such a wonderful relationship and connection with all her children, and it's a beautiful thing to watch.

In a recent interview, Huffpost Parents shared that Jolie most candidly spoke out about her 15-year-old Zahara about how so incredibly "in awe" she is of her.

“My daughter is from Ethiopia, one of my children,” Jolie said during a video conversation with Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate. “And I have learned so much from her. She is my family, but she is an extraordinary African woman and her connection to her country, her continent, is her own and it’s something I only stand back in awe of.”

Zahara was adopted by Angelina Jolie and her now ex-husband, Brad Pitt back in 2005, from an orphanage in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa when she was 6 months old. In 2002, she adopted her son Maddox from Cambodia and, also with Pitt, son Pax from Vietnam in 2007. They also share together three biological children, Shiloh and twins, Knox and Vivienne.

And just like us, Jolie has different approaches that she applies to parenting, which all comes back to just being real, honest, and open with her children. We really feel that. It's so important for your kids to know that they can come to you for anything and be given an answer that isn't always sugar-coated.

“With my adopted children, I can’t speak of pregnancy, but I speak with much detail and love about the journey to find them and what it was like to look in their eyes for the first time,” she told Vogue India in June, adding that “adoption and orphanage are positive words in our home.”

Zahara came up in the conversation when the topics of climate justice and racism were being discussed. With the nationwide protests happening against police brutality, Jolie shared that she has shifted her focus in her own home to really combating systemic racism. She has spent a great deal of her life advocating for the rights of refugees abroad, but it was important for her to pivot a bit.
