Amber Portwood is receiving the full support of her friends and family, including her ex Gary Shirley, as she faces domestic violence charges in her hometown of Indiana. Portwood was arrested on charges of domestic battery earlier this month after her live-in boyfriend and father of her one-year-old son James, Andrew Glennon, texted 911 asking for help during a physical confrontation with Portwood.
Last week Portwood made an appearance in court where she was granted supervised visits with her son and had the support of not only Shirley but her MTV family behind her. Co-stars Catelynn Lowell, Cheyenne Floyd, and Maci Bookout were all in attendance during Portwood's hearing. Glennon alleges that Portwood assaulted him when he was holding their child and that the mother of two struck a door using a machete as he was standing on the other side, holding James.
Shirley tweeted a message of support for his ex and the mother of his 10-year-old daughter Leah that was met with mixed reactions from his followers. "All I could ask is for is @AmberLPortwood to be happy & healthy. She has all of my support," he posted online.
While many applauded his support, others felt that it was unfounded. "All I ask if they amber learns a lesson, Takes personal responsibility for what happens, mtv fires her because this is the 2nd documented time she’s been accused of DV, and people stop defending her. I think what her cast members did is disgusting and they need to be called out," wrote one commenter. "She will never be happy and healthy as long as she is an abusive narcissist & that will never change. Youve been a victim of her abuse - support andrew&james the way u wish u were supported back then&dont fall for her manipulation through her sob stories," wrote another.
Although he didn't elaborate any further, he did retweet a post someone had sent him suggesting there was more to the entire story than everyone knows at this point. "Think about it really, Gary, mtv cast and crew are all supporting amber. I’m just not sure we’ve heard the whole truth," read the message that Shirley retweeted.
Portwood has been arrested for domestic violence in the past when she and Shirley were still a couple. She has long documented her struggle with her mental health and has been diagnosed as bipolar as well as with borderline personality disorder. Glennon is currently seeking primary custody of their son "due to her frequent refusal and/or failure to take medicines prescribed to treat her mental health conditions, among other concerns," according to court documents.
While Shirley hasn't commented much on Portwood's current legal issues, he has made it clear that he has her best interests in mind. When Portwood was first arrested Shirley tweeted that "My prayers are with @AmberLPortwood , Andrew, & most importantly baby James, idk any of the particulars, however I’m thinking of them."

Portwood did not attend the Teen Mom OG reunion taping on July 13 in New York City.
