Amazon Offers A Simple Way To Donate School Supplies To Students In Need

It's hard to believe but in just a few short weeks the kids will be heading back to school (if they haven't done so already). You've no doubt noticed the endless parade of back to school supplies in stores and you may have already started your own supply shopping. For many school supplies are a luxury and families rely on donations of school supplies to help their children be prepared for the upcoming school year. This year Amazon has partnered with the charity Communities in Schools to make it super easy to donate school supplies to students in need.

Now you can simply command your Alexa to send a backpack full of school supplies to a student in need. By saying, "Alexa, Donate to Happy School Year" you will prompt your Alexa to order a backpack up to $25 that will then be shipped to Communities in Schools. Once you order your backpack, Amazon will match your backpack donation by filling the backpack with the school supplies that every child needs to for a successful school year. Items included will be pens, pencils, rulers, notebooks as well as a variety of other school supplies. Amazon will match the first $200,000 in backpack donations.

So how does it work exactly? Once you issue the voice command to Alexa, Amazon has pre-selected backpacks that it will assign to each order. Alexa will then give you a brief description of the backpack as well as tell you the price before the donation is confirmed. Once it's confirmed the Amazon will then ship the backpack directly to Communities in Schools where it will be filled with school supplies.

Former pro NBA player Shaquille O’Neal is a member of CIS’s National Board of Directors and each time you donate a backpack, you'll receive a thank you message from Shaq himself. According to CIS, approximately 1 in 5 children under the age of 18 live in poverty, making this initiative incredibly important.

The Happy School Year promotion ends on September 9, 2019, and there is a limit of 5 per customer. If you wanted to make a monetary donation instead of the backpack donation you can still use your Alexa to do that. Simply say, “Alexa, donate [dollar amount] to [charity of choice] and it will be done.
