A missing preteen's stepmother has been charged with her murder after her body was found behind their home in Gas City, Indiana. It was a truly horrific ending to the case of Skylea Carmack, a 10-year-old girl who had been missing since August 31st.
According to reports from IndyStar, Skylea's stepmother, Amanda Carmack, was arrested after the young girl's body was found. Her cause of death was determined to be strangulation, and her body was recovered in a shed behind the family's home. Amanda Carmack had told family members and the police that she had run away from home on August 31st, 2019. The police believe that was likely already dead when this was reported, as evidence shows the time of death to be around the time that her disappearance was being explained away by her stepmom.
According to IndyStar, Skylea's body was found in the shed on Wednesday, wrapped in a plastic garbage bag. Amanda Carmack, who is 34 was arrested and believed to be solely responsible for the young girl's death. She then told others that the girl had run away to cover her tracks. This led to a search for the girl who was believed to be missing, with many people in the community joining in the search party.
It's unbelievable that someone could do this to a child. The community is left shocked, and struggling to understand what led to the death of the girl. It's an incredibly sad ending, especially for those who were holding out hope that Skylea really did run away, and would be found alive and well. Now the family is left with more questions, especially given the fact that it was her own stepmother who is accused of killing her. At the time of the murder, Skylea's father was at work, and he was told by Amanda Carmack that the 10-year-old girl had run away from home.
At this point the investigation is ongoing, and Amanda Carmack has been charged with murder, neglect, and some other crimes pertaining to this case.
