OK, what is a VSCO girl and why is it all kids are talking about right now? It's hard to keep up with all the different apps and social media sites your kids are using. Just when you get think you've figured out what Music.ly is, Tik Tok comes along. And when you've finally figured out your child's finsta account name (that's a fake Instagram account name) you realize that there's something new called VSCO. While VSCO itself isn't new — the app has been around since 2012 — it's definitely been growing in popularity thanks to the teen demographic over the last year or so. Similar to Instagram, VSCO is a photography app where users can upload pictures and apply different filters and frames and they can also repost photos and memes from other users that they love. Aesthetics are big on VSCO and allow the user to create a seamless, consistent feed featuring retro filters. The big difference between VSCO and Instagram is that there are not "like" or comment buttons in VSCO.

A VSCO Girl Term, Explained

Whether you know already knew what VSCO is or not, you've probably heard the term "VSCO Girl" floating around on social media lately. The term, which was coined on social media app Tik Tok, was originally used to describe your basic white, middle-class high school, teenage girl. In fact, according to Dictionary.com, "VSCO girl has generally become as a mocking meme and insult, roughly equivalent to basic bitch.

The term may refer to a particular young woman perceived to be as a VSCO girl or to refer to stereotypical VSCO girl look and lifestyle." But VSCO Girls aren't having any of that negativity and are embracing the term regardless of what people think of it. If you search #VSCOGirl on Instagram you'll find more than 1 million posts with the hashtag.

So what is a VSCO Girl? VSCO Girls have evolved to have a recognizable aesthetic making it easy to point out who is, in fact, a VSCO Girl.

The Uniform Of A VSCO Girl:

VSCO girls are identifiable by their wardrobe, which consists of oversize t-shirts and sweatshirts, short athletic shorts, scrunchies, comfy shoes, jewelry and of course a commitment to the environment. The VSCO girl look doesn't come cheap, however, because of all of the items they wear are typically brand name. Oversized t-shirts and sweatshirts are maybe something from the store Brandy Melville or surf staple Ron Jon or the label Champion that is currently experiencing its own resurgence in popularity.

The shorts are typically an athletic brand such as Nike or Lululemon and are short enough that they're fully covered by the oversized t-shirt.

The shoes are comfortable and commonly Birkenstocks or Crocs or any other similar so ugly but comfy they're cool shoes.

The Accessories Of A VSCO Girl

Accessories are very important in identifying a VSCO girl. The Puka Shell or seashell necklace is a staple in all VSCO Girl wardrobes.

Scrunchies are also a very important accessory every VSCO girl has. While once popular back in the '80s and 90's, scrunchies are back and every VSCO girl has one to match every oversized t-shirt they own.

If the scrunchies aren't wrapped around their hair, they will be safely secured on their wrist

VSCO girls love bracelets too, including those from brand Pura Vida, that creates affordable and cute bracelets that can be stacked or worn alone.

Swedish based Fjällräven Kånken backpacks are also very popular amongst VSCO Girls.

VSCO Girl Has A Commitment to the Environment

VSCO girls are all about saving the turtles, which is why they are often spotted using their reusable Hydro Flask water bottles that are of course covered in super cute stickers (that may or may not have come with their Pura Vida order).

They also use their own reusable straws when they buy drinks on the go.

Beauty Products VSCO Girls Use

VSCO girls aren't worried about contouring and making sure their makeup is done perfectly, they're a little more low maintenance when it comes to their beauty routines. One staple is lip balm or lip gloss. Carmex lip balm is a must-have for any VSCO girl.

They also keep their skin healthy and glowing using Mario Badescu products.

Catchphrases Of A VSCO Girl

There are two "catchphrases" that VSCO girls are known for and that's "sksksksk" and "and I oop." Sksksksk is seen more commonly in written form and is basically the same as writing "LOL" or "OMG" or any other kind of reaction a teen girl would write in a text or Snap Chat. VSCO girls are also known to say sksksksk which sounds exactly as odd as it looks.

Another common phrase used by VSCO girls is "and I oop." It should be noted that both 'sksksksk' and 'and I oop' were both phrases originally popularized by the Black community and appropriated by VSCO girls.  Jasmine Masters, a drag queen who competed on Season 7 of RuPaul's Drag Race and RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars Season 4 created the now VSCO Girl popular phrase "and I oop" while filming a video. During the filming Masters accidentally hit her testicles causing her now infamous and meme-worthy reaction.

"And I oop" can be used anytime a VSCO girl is surprised or shocked or just scattered throughout the conversation.

Although VSCO girls have become increasingly meme-worthy and mocked on social media apps like Tik Tok, they've embraced their status and are totally in on the joke. We're sure the VSCO girl's popularity will quickly fade, but hopefully, the positive vibes and environmental consciousness it created will remain.
