The days are getting shorter and the weather is getting cooler which means that summer is slowly coming to an end. Most of us mark the beginning of the cooler weather and the fall season by sending the kids back to school, and although this year looks a bit different than previous years, new fall hair color trends are happening. While many of us love to go a bit lighter with hair color during the summer months, embracing the sun-kissed highlighted look and beachy waves that personify the carefree days of summer, with the cooler weather comes a variety of new trends that are as cool and comforting as the weather.

While summer may give us cool blondes and icy highlights, fall is all about embracing those warmer brunette and auburn tones and chunkier highlights. If you're looking for a new look this fall, check out these gorgeous hair color trends that will dominate the fall fashion trends.

Twilighting

You've heard about highlighting, which is so popular especially in the summer months, but what exactly is twilighting? Colorist Karissa Schaudt at Maxine Salon in Chicago explained to Glamour why twilighting, which adds gold dimension to brunettes with warm undertones, is one of the hottest trends for the fall. “The look is achieved by painting a few balayage pieces in addition to foiled babylights," she told the magazine. "You’ll be seeing a lot of this look in 2020 because it’s a low-maintenance color that will carry from season to season." Sadly there are no vampires involved in twilighting.

Bold Roots

Many have been rocking the bold roots this summer as a result of salons being shut down due to the coronavirus health pandemic, but who knew they were actually embracing one of this fall's hottest trends?  Stephanie Brown, a colorist at IGK Salon Soho explained to Allure that bold roots, like the kind singer Dua Lipa is rocking above, are totally on-trend this season.  "Adding a little bit of a root gives your hair-color a little more edge," Brown told the magazine. "Sometimes blondes want to be bright all year, but I've been seeing more opting for a rooted look," she added. "It’s lower maintenance than single-process, yet the effect is still bright."

Add Some Color

Celebrities are always setting trends and you've no doubt seen a number of different celebs sporting bright colors such as pink, blue, and purple in their hair. After spending months in quarantine, many women are happily embracing something new and these new hues are quickly becoming one fall's hottest trends. Celebrity colorist Josh Wood, founder of Josh Wood Atelier in London told Byrdie that color is going to be increasingly popular this fall.“2020 will prove to be a colorful year if the amount of color we did on the runways for spring is anything to go by,” Wood explained. “This year, it’s about bringing out one’s personality with hair color and getting a color, be it from black to pink, that really suits you."

Katie Hale, head of color at Charles Worthington Salons in the UK agreed, telling the magazine that blue is another color that will be a hot hair trend. “Watch out for blue!” Hale said, adding, “Pantone’s 2020 color of the year this will most definitely make an appearance, whether you’re suited to icy blue hues, statement denim blue or a glossy blue-black."

Raspberry Bourbon Hair

When we think of fall we often think of warmer shades of brunette and auburn which is why this fresh new raspberry bourbon hair color is quickly becoming a huge trend for this upcoming season. Devon Toth, a hairstylist at NYC Salon SCK, explained to Glamour why this color is so hot right now. "I think raspberry bourbon hair color is so appealing because it feels like highlights for the winter," Toth explained. "It's an unexpected way of brightening up your hair color during a season when people typically take their hair shade a bit darker. The depth is still there, but it melts into this bright, rustic mahogany tone. It's an evolution of the cherry hair color with an added hint of purple."

Chunky Highlights

Hair artist Chris Weber Mirlach told Behind The Chair that chunky highlights are a great way for clients to play with color. "This technique is perfect for anyone who wants a pop of color and a low maintenance upkeep," he explained. "Any client with a darker base is ideal for this look because it provides the perfect amount of contrast. Clients with a lighter base can still have this look, but it would require darkening the base and have a higher maintenance level."

Matrix Celebrity Colorist George Papanikolas agreed telling Byrdie, “curly hair with chunky highlights will be big, We will see lots of layering and all-around big, curly hair. Chunky highlights are fun and playful—plus that they won’t disappear into the curls. Adding a shadow root will keep the curls looking modern.”

Gloss

Gorgeous, healthy-looking shiny locks are always on trend and one way to achieve that look, even if you're simply after a boost to your existing hair color is to use a gloss.  Sean Godard, Redken master artist explained how using a gloss can simply make your hair "look better."

"Everyone loves super shiny hair, and doing glosses allows you to enhance or neutralize your current hair without a serious commitment," he told InStyle magazine. He also added that glosses are a great way to revitalize brunette and darker hair that has become a bit dull or brassy.
