45 Percent Of People Wear The Same Undies For 2 Days Or More

Human beings can be a little gross. A quick trip on the subway will tell you as much, but did you know that there's a good chance the person sat next to you on your commute may be wearing days-old underwear? There's some food for thought. According to a new survey, 45% of Americans wear the same pair of underwear for 2 days or more. There's a thought that's sure to brighten your day. Tommy John thought they'd shed some light on the situation by conducting a study, resulting in this cringe-worthy information.

Another 13% of Americans further shamed the nation by admitting they had previously worn the same pair for over a week. Interestingly, men were 2.5 times more likely to wear the same undies for a prolonged period of time, compared to women. While that may not come as a surprise to most of us, it's still a little disconcerting. As it turns out, Americans aren't just happy to wear a pair of boxers for a few days past their sell-by date, either. They're also prone to keeping them kicking around the underwear drawer for a while, too. Another 46% of the 1,000 surveyed said they had intimates that were over a year old. While this may not necessarily seem like a shocker, delicates can keep hold of bacteria for a seriously long time, even when laundered.

You may have a favorite pair of panties, but unless you want to wind up with a UTI, yeast infection, or skin infection, it might be best to take a trip to the mall and restock. Out with the old, in the with the new! As well as knocking our socks off with the survey, Tommy John also offered up some advice to the underwear-wearing masses to help preserve the pairs you've already got. They suggest the following:

  • Tumble-dry your underwear on low for 30 mins after washing as this helps to kill off further bacteria, leaving your junk duly protected
  • Don't wash your underwear in the same wash if other family members/roommates are sick. No one wants a fu-fu with a cold!
  • Avoid washing undies with other clothes that are stained with bodily fluids (take that as you will) to negate anything nasty coming into contact with your intimate area

Most importantly, change your underwear daily and don't be part of the 45%!
