Alicia Silverstone is one actress that everyone knows and loves thanks to her unforgettable role as Cher in the class movie, Clueless. And while Alicia has certainly had plenty of ups and downs in her career, she’s become a household name thanks to the film. No one can deny that Cher will always be an important part of pop culture and a character that defined a single generation.

In addition to her work as a Hollywood actress, Alicia also makes headlines for some of the things she does and says off-screen, too. As a matter of fact, Alicia is very vocal about living a clean, organic lifestyle for both her and her son, Bear. She’s a dedicated vegan who puts her family’s health needs over everything else. And as many can imagine, some of the things that Alicia says do turn out to be quite "interesting".

With that being said, here are 20 things most people probably didn’t know about Alicia and the way she parents at home. Some of these you might agree with, some you might not. Either way, Alicia does things the way she sees fit, regardless of what other people think. Take a look at our list below and let us know what you think!

20 Shy Beginnings

Alicia might be one of the most outspoken actresses and celebrities in the entertainment world today, but she says that it wasn’t always this way for her. She told The Guardian back in 2015, “My parents are both English and they took us to England every summer. My dad would take us to see tons of theatre and that’s where my love of acting really started. When I was in junior high school, he saw me in a school play and thought wow, she’s got something. I need to get her into an acting class. I was probably very shy at first and a little narcoleptic.”

19 Clean Living

A lot of fans will admit that Alicia Silverstone is one Hollywood actress that looks like she hasn’t aged in decades. As a matter of fact, she always looks young and fresh-faced, and there’s a good reason for it. The actress says that her life is all about clean living these days. But it wasn’t always this way. As a child, she often took the same kind of meds that many other children her age would often take to help fight illnesses. She’s since removed it all from her medicine cabinet.

Alicia said (via Brainy Quotes): “I don't take any of the meds I took when I was younger: antibiotics, antacids, aspirin, asthma inhalers, ulcer medication, allergy shots.”

18 Her Son Bear

With that being said, Alicia makes sure that her son Bear, remains as healthy as she does on a daily basis. That’s why she also refuses to give him over the counter meds, as many other parents do. And according to Alicia, it seems to be working for him, as he almost never gets sick, which is a rarity for young kids his age. “He’s never had to take medicine in his life,” she told Page Six of her 7-year-old son, Bear, earlier this year. “He can get sniffles and a runny nose but he’s not down, he still goes to school. Two times in his life has he been like ‘Mommy I don’t feel good,’ and it was only for a few hours and he was back running around.”

17 Vegan Lifestyle

Alicia and her son are both vegans and according to the actress, it’s one of the best lifestyle choices she’s ever made in her life. In fact, she feels healthier and stronger now that she has ever felt in her life before. She not only sees the difference, but she can feel the difference, too."I used to have all those white marks on my nails and they were very brittle, and now they're so strong I cannot bend them," she said on why she decided to go vegan, according to Oprah.com. "My eyes got really white, and I feel like I look less puffy."

16 No Dairy

This might come as a surprise for many moms and dads, but Alicia Silverstone managed to raise Bear without ever putting one diaper on him! A lot of parents couldn’t imagine not putting a diaper on their child (especially during the first six months) but for Alicia, it seemed to work very well for her and Bear. As a matter of fact, she insists other parents do the same. She once said, "All babies should crawl around bottomless leaving little baby poo trails everywhere. And, if you see a baby making its doo doo face, grab it and hold it over the toilet real quick."

15 No Dairy

Alicia’s son has never had a glass of milk in his life. He’s never had a hamburger with cheese (or any meat for that matter) and he’s never enjoyed an ice cream cone with his friends. That’s because Alicia believes that dairy is toxic and should be completely eliminated from everyone’s diets. And while this lifestyle and diet choice seems to work very well for her and Bear right now, many of her fans and critics can’t help but wonder if Bear might one day want to indulge in a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream. We are all allowed at least one cheat-day, right?

14 No Crib

Alicia’s son Bear has never slept a night in his life inside a crib. According to the actress, putting your child in a crib makes them feel like they are sleeping in a box or worse, in a cell and that’s why she’s always insisted on having her son sleep in a regular bed. But with that being said, she is also a firm believer that every child should experience co-sleeping with their parents. In other words, her bed is the family bed.

Alicia believes that kids should be able to sleep with their parents for as long as they want, whenever they want. No questions asked.

13 Making The World A Better Place

According to Alicia, she and her son Bear do their part in making the world a better place with their plant-based diet. They are also helping to reduce their carbon footsteps as they want to help be as resourceful as possible. Alicia is not only educating her son this way, but doing her part in educating her fans, too. "If you really want to make change on this planet, a plant-based diet is the easiest, fastest way to get there," Alicia told the Mind Body and Food Blog. "Eating plant-based dials down our insane consumption of precious natural resources like fresh water, oil, coal, and the rain forests."

12 No Vaccinations

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone, but Alicia Silverstone is also another celebrity mom who is very anti-vaccination. Her son has never seen a needle in his life and there’s a good chance that he won’t ever see one, either. It’s a controversial topic, but Alicia likes to stick to her beliefs, even though they don’t align with what a lot of medical professionals have to say about it. She said in an interview, "There is increasing anecdotal evidence from doctors who have gotten distressed phone calls from parents claiming their child was 'never the same' after receiving a vaccine. And I personally have friends whose babies were drastically affected in this way."

11 Solo Motherhood

Alicia’s personal life has seen plenty of ups and downs recently. As a matter of fact, she pulled the plug on her marriage to her husband, Christopher Jarecki. The couple were married in 2005 but decided to end things in 2018. And according to Alicia, it’s been a very tough year for everyone in her family.

On being a single mom, she told Redbook, “Obviously, it’s heartbreaking. You don’t ever think you’ll be apart when you get married. All I can really say is that we’ll co-parent [7 year-old son] Bear together, and this is completely a good thing for both of us.”

10 Crying It Out

The actress is a firm believer in allowing your child to self-soothe or “cry it out.” In other words, if your child is feeling distressed, rather than comfort or soothe him, simply let them cry before they calm themselves down. A lot of parents might have a hard time hearing their children scream (in the next room no less) but for Alicia, it’s really no big deal. She can take the noise, you guys! Alicia once said, “"If you let your kids cry it out or self-soothe, you're hurting your parent-child relationship. So the baby 'misses out on the trust building that's crucial in infant development.'"

9 Public Criticism

Alicia knows that a lot of things she says often get criticized by the public. But she also knows that comes with the territory, especially as a Hollywood actress and a celebrity. In other words, she doesn’t pay much attention to it. Speaking about all of the criticism she gets from the public, Alicia told Redbook magazine in an interview that it doesn’t bother her at all. She said, “Not one bit. Because my experience was women on the street who would say, 'Your book changed my life.' I feel very passionate and confident with every choice I’ve made as a mom and as an activist. Anyone who has issues with it can have them; it doesn’t affect me.”

8 Teaching Respect

For Alicia, she knows that people have their opinions and that some people might simply not agree with your personal views. That’s why she chooses to teach her son the meaning of respect. As much as she tries to promote her vegan lifestyle, she doesn’t get into public spats with others simply because they choose to eat, think or simply live differently than she does. She likes to educate and she likes to promote veganism, but she also knows that it’s not for everyone, and she’s ok with that. Alicia is simply doing what’s best for her and her son.

7 Her Thoughts On Feminism

The actress managed to make headlines when she openly criticized Wonder Woman, which was touted as a great movie for both young boys and girls back in 2017. Alicia told Variety, “Before Wonder Woman there have been many movies with female leads, so I get a little confused about the conver—I understand that we are not in a place—this is what the show is about. We have made strides of course, because I think about, what about all those wonderful comedians who are females who have had massive hits? There’s Bridesmaids. There’s a movie out right now… with tons of girls?”

6 She Pre-Chews His Food

Alicia has also gotten a lot of criticism for pre-chewing her son’s food. As a matter of fact, she once shared a YouTube Video of pre-chewing her son’s food during a meal they shared together back in 2012. Needless to say, a lot of parents were not impressed with it. As much as we love our children, no human being wants to eat food that was already chewed in someone else’s mouth, even if it does come from your own mother! Alicia, on the other hand, doesn’t seem to be bothered about it. For her, it’s just part of their daily routine.

5 Breastfeeding

Alicia Silverstone is a huge advocate of breastfeeding and tries to promote it as much as possible in her media interviews. Alicia said (via Us Weekly): “A lot of women unfortunately have a similar struggle, and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to give their babies the most amazing start in life with clean, mean, glorious breastmilk. And because we are a community of beautiful souls who recognize the importance of food as health, I say we help support those mamas and babies who need a hand during one of the most important times in their lives.”

4 Bear In Social Media

Alicia Silverstone doesn’t consider herself to be a “celebrity mom” per-se. But at the same time, she’s not afraid to include Bear in her public appearances, her social media posts, or in any of the products that she is promoting. As a matter of fact, she often shares behind-the-scenes moments of her and Bear on her social media accounts. Bear is simply a part of her life, and she’s not one to hold back, especially when it comes to sharing some of the highlights from her personal life with her fans. She’s a proud mom, and she doesn’t mind sharing it with the world!

3 No Thanksgiving Turkey

Because Alicia and her son Bear are vegans, she chooses not to participate in plenty of holiday traditions, like sharing turkey on Thanksgiving day. As a matter of fact, she even shared a photo of herself on social media saying, “Please don’t hurt the turkey, kiss it instead!” And while there won’t be any turkey and gravy on Alicia’s Thanksgiving table, we do know that she and her family are going to have a wonderful holiday no matter what! After all, she’s a dedicated mom who always makes sure that her son gets to experience the best of what life has to offer – with or without the turkey!

2 Motherhood And Maturity

Alicia has also made it no secret that motherhood has definitely changed her life. As a matter of fact, it’s made her a more secure and a more mature person, and she is very thankful for it.

Alicia said (via Brainy Quotes): “From 19 to 28 there was a lot of turmoil in my life, but in a stuck way. Then, around 28, my life started to get shaken up. I realized I wanted to grow more and that anything that wasn't working in my life, I could fix it. I feel like I came into my womanhood. And that was when I got married.”

1 Motherhood Over Hollywood

Alicia is not very active in Hollywood and there’s a good reason for it. She loves being a hands-on mom instead. Speaking about why she left Hollywood, Alicia told The Guardian, “I went on a quest to change the world, to make things better – for children, for the earth, for animals. I wasn’t paying attention to my career, I was paying attention to something else. And then one day I went: “Wait, I want to act, too, what’s going on?” There’s a lot more to it that obviously is personal and private. But that’s where I’m at. I can happily have a husband and a child and a life, and I get to contribute in a really meaningful way to the world and I also get to be an actress. And that’s a wonderful thing to be.”
