Model, chef, wife and mom Chrissy Teigen has never been one to shy away from telling it like it is. From her direct tweets to followers, to her candid interviews, the 32-year-old is known to talk about subjects that are otherwise seen as “taboo.” Teigen has been commended in the past for sharing her personal experiences with body image and even shared pictures of her stretch marks before becoming a mother. Not to much surprise, when the celebrity and foodie gave birth to her first daughter, Luna, with husband and singer John Legend, she continued to be open about her experiences with childbirth, motherhood and marriage on a day-to-day basis. Teigen has also spoken publicly about her experiences with post-partum depression following her first pregnancy, but following the recent birth of baby number two, she seems to be in good spirits and is beloved for her realistic and often satirical approach when it comes to the challenges of motherhood. From adorable photos with baby Luna to thoughts from the depths of her soul, she shares many of her experiences on Twitter. Have a look at a few of our favorites.
17 When She Was All Of Us
What's better then fajita Wednesdays? Well, taco Tuesdays of course! Tacos y Birria La Unica is a restaurant that serves the Los Angeles area. The mother of two posted a photo of herself at one of Taco y Birria La Unica food trucks, feeling blessed for the food she was about to enjoy.
This was not just a regular visit to a food truck parked on the side of the street. The taco food truck was requested to drive up to the Legend household to satisfy the cravings of a pregnant woman! Talk about home delivery service.
This wasn't the first time that Teigen, her husband, and their first born child had tacos delivered to them via food truck. In March 2018, the then six-month-pregnant Teigen was able to track down a taco truck she saw on the Netflix show Ugly Delicious. The truck was requested to serve tacos to about 10 people, that the Legend family was hosting at their Academy Awards night get-together. The owners of the taco truck were paid the fee they would normally charge for an 80-person event and was given the opportunity of making a pregnant woman happy.
Whether you're pregnant or not, when that taco craving hits, you just have to find a way to fulfill it and quickly.
16 Always Quick To Sass
Being mother – especially becoming a first-time mother – merits an outing from time to time, as it can be overwhelming and tiring. This is exactly what Teigen and husband John Legend did 10 days after the birth of their firstborn. And of course, people freaked out!
One follower went as far as stating the only reason she went out was to show off her snap back skills:
“She worried about showing off her snap back. She gone mess around and catch set back. Wow who do u really trust with your week old baby. Ain’t nothing that important that u have to go out.”
While another roasted her saying, "The spotlight pull be strong. One week. Who wants to leave a one-week-old baby to go to a bar?”
According to Self magazine, it is important to get a break when you become a mom.
"The early days and weeks postpartum can be isolating, intimidating, and emotionally draining,"Kristen M. Carpenter, Ph.D., director of Women’s Behavioral Health at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center tells SELF. "Taking a break from baby can help mothers recharge and collect their thoughts."
Nevertheless, Teigen had the perfect response for all her critics:
“I went to dinner. People are pissed. Good morning!”
15 Ankles Aren't The Only Thing That Swell
Chrissy Teigen is not shy to express, through Twitter, how she really feels about something. While pregnant with her second child, she showed that even as a celebrity, she shares the pregnancy struggles that all women share.
Not all women and moms are prepared to face the truths of certain aspects of life, especially about pregnancy weight gain. It seems, however, as though the soon-to-be mom of two embraces it.
“Kraft makes a ‘thick and creamy’ version of their original mac and cheese but why not just replace the original with it? It’s infinitely better. Yes I have gained 38 pounds so far in this pregnancy thank you for asking,” Teigen wrote.
She announced her weight gain out there for her 9 million Twitter followers to see! What an inspiration to all women. Later on, she posted on Twitter:
“I think this baby is gonna come out of my face,” followed by the tweets: “I would weigh 40 pounds less without a face.” and "My arms aren’t long enough to FaceTime."
Despite the gained weight, I think we can all agree that Chrissy Teigen still looks amazing!
14 Fighting All The Mean Mommies
Chrissy Teigen is known to the social media world as being funny, family-oriented and sarcastic. She also has a fiery reputation for being brutally honest about anything and anyone who decides to cross her path.
She, like many other celebrities, has been put under a microscope for every little thing they do during their day. Since becoming pregnant with her first child, Luna, Teigen has come under fire for choosing to become pregnant using IVF methods and how she parents and cares for Luna.
The former runway model was recently criticized by the way she held Luna on a slide, captioning the photo "Weeeee are very skeptical of slides right now." Her Instagram and Twitter followers didn't miss a heartbeat and started expressing their frustration that the way she was holding her daughter was dangerous and could cause bodily harm. She responded:
“Wish you guys would have told me about the leg thing earlier. They broke. Both of them. And everyone else’s in the park broke too just from watching it happen. There are so many broken legs here.”
Later adding a more serious tweet that the picture was “a one second moment in time” and that she was simply lifting Luna onto her lap and no one was injured.
In an interview with PopSugar, she explains that her toughest critics are often other mothers, which surprises her.
"When it's somebody else who's a mother, you're like, 'come on!' We're all in the same boat here, we're all learning, none of us are experts at this thing. So for me, it's more of like: 'I can't believe you had the guts to say this!'"
13 Has She Been Pregnant Her Whole Life?
Despite Chrissy Teigen and husband John Legend having difficulties conceiving naturally, to some of her Twitter followers it seems as though she has been pregnant for a long time.
The former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model has been very open with her fans about not only using IVF to help conceive a child but that she and her husband also chose the gender of the child.
"I've made this decision ... Not only am I having a girl, I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, 'Let's put in the girl.' " explaining that a son will come along. "It excited me to see ... just the thought of seeing him with a little girl. I think he deserves a little girl. I think he deserves that bond."
Teigen announced that she and John were expecting their first child in October 2015 and who was born in April 2016. The couple announced they were pregnant with their second child in 2017 when Luna was 19 months old.
Although it is reported that John and Chrissy would like to have a ton of kids, a recent Tweet suggests the couple may take some time to enjoy their two children now that their son is born.
“Happy pregnant Chrissy is gone. meet OVER IT Chrissy,” she tweeted on Wednesday, May 9th. “Wanna hold my boy let’s do thisssssss.”
12 True ... Crime?
The love between Teigen and Legend is empowering and should be every couple's goal. Every picture, snap, and tweet drips with love and laughter when it comes to these two. But it didn't always feel this way.
In an interview with Refinery 29, both John and Chrissy acknowledge that it was not love at first sight and that they grew into their relationship.
"I don’t know the exact moment, actually. I’ve had friends that said the day they met their wife, they knew she was gonna be their wife. And I have other friends who kinda grew into it." John said. "Chrissy and I definitely grew into it — we started to learn each other, and then I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. I think everybody comes to it differently, but at some point in Chrissy and I’s relationship, I just knew that I wanted to build a life with her and be with her forever. You know, have babies and all that!"
In 2016, Teigen shocked her fans when she admitted that there was a time that the couple didn't think they would make it:
"I was on tour with him and he'd gotten sick. He was feeling really bummed and stressed out. He was like, 'I can't be in a relationship right now.' That lasted for one day. I knew it came from a place other than us not working. I always joke, 'Remember when you tried to break up with me?' He's like, "Yes, sorry. Big mistake."
Thankfully they were able to smooth over that bump in the road because honestly, they are too cute for words.
11 Trying To Catch Some ZZZZZs
We sometimes forget that celebrities get hit just as hard with life's harshness as any "average" person would. They too struggle with depressions, food cravings, being body shamed, juggling family time, all while trying to keep a certain celebrity status persona in the public's eye.
While keeping this in mind, becoming a celebrity mother is no different. They too have to learn to balance life (sometimes while on tour or on different events that involve traveling), sleep, feedings, a crying baby, and diapers.
“I’m not kidding, I go there not to watch a movie, I go there to sleep. I order food, lay on my side and shovel it into my mouth. I get the blanket and lay there and he watches the movie and I am passed out." Teigen said in the interview with PARENTS magazine.
Most women can relate when it comes to Chrissy trying to get her daughter to sleep:
“My biggest parenting conundrum: why it is so hard to put someone who is already sleepy to sleep?”
Isn't that the main question among all mothers?
10 Baby John!
A doppelganger is defined as an apparition or double of a living person. There are adult versions of doppelgangers and then there's John Legend and his baby doppelganger. When one fan asked Teigen if she had had her baby yet and posted a picture of a mini version of John it did not take long for theories and rumors to spread. Twitter fans not only demanded explanations but also bombarded Twitter with other babies that look like the "Ordinary People" singer and Teigen has had enough of it. Although the photo that originally started the online discussion on Twitter and earned more than 42,000 likes and was retweeted more than 33,000 times; the former model begged the internet to stop sending her John Legend babies explaining that:
"For the LAST TIME, JOHN looks like a baby so A LOT OF BABIES LOOK LIKE HIM STOP SENDING ME JOHN BABIES."
One fan offered the best explanation possible for the numerous amount of babies who have an uncanny resemblance to John.
Although this is scientifically impossible, it is a nice thought!
While others gave more plausible explanations:
Either way, John, and Chrissy are happy with their own two beautiful babies that are a pleasant mix of both gene pools.
9 Diaper Duo
While there are many hormonal changes to a woman's body after she gives birth, there are also physical and internal changes that are not often spoken about. Discharge, known and lochia, and heavy bleeding are common side effects for women after they give birth. Most hospitals will provide larger and heavier pads, disposal mesh underwear or adult diapers to help keep new mothers clean during the heavier than normal flow.
One of the most real Tweets Chrissy posted was a couple of days after she gave birth to her daughter, Luna. It is a clear indication that what happens to the woman and her body after the beautiful, yet messy birth process is not discussed as much as it should be.
"Women aren't given simple information about what they need to do [after giving birth]," Tania Boler, founder, and CEO of Chiaro, said. "In the U.S., new moms are often so focused on their babies that they don't think about themselves."
Most recently, the now mother of two posted a photo of herself wearing mesh underwear while holding her newborn baby boy with Luna in the background. She captions the photo "If you haven't seen @aliwong's new Netflix special, you are bad at picking Netflix specials #asianpearunderwear," The caption refers to the Ali Wong's Netflix comedy special, Ali Wong Hard Knock Wife, in which the comedian goes into great detail about postpartum effects on a women's body and compares the stretchy mesh underwear that hospitals give new moms to the sleeves wrapped around pears in gift baskets.
8 Pregnancy Equals Complicated Car Seats
Every mother and father can relate to Chrissy Teigen's car seat troubles. Installing a car seat can be very frustrating, especially when you're several months pregnant and trying to prepare for when your bundle of joy will be born. At least once it's installed the only thing that can be even more frustrating is putting an infant toddler in a car seat when they don't want to. But that's a topic for another day.
Installing a car seat can be very confusing. The instruction manuals are quite long and the fear that is imprinted on the installer with ALL the hazard warnings can make one sweat. From rolling up your sleeves to tackling the "one-time only clean" car seat with a whole lot of swearing in between, keeping our children safe is still the number one priority no matter how difficult the installation process is.
About a year-and-a-half after installing the car seat, Teigen still has cold sweats over the car seat when she shares a picture of one-year-old Luna strapped into one.
She was praised by one mother who called her brave for taking the chance of being mom shamed for the way Luna was strapped in. But Teigen, as always, had a response before the mom shaming could begin:
"Oh trust me, I looked at that chest plate for 10 minutes before posting!" Teigen replied to the tweet.
7 Filter Names Are Now Baby Names?
Baby names are becoming more of a, let's say, unique trend rather than parents choosing a name that has a meaning or is "normal."
According to BabyCenter.com, the name "Lux" rose 75 percent on the 2015 list of baby boy names compared to 2014’s list. Other popular filterbabynames that got hot are Amaro, Hudson, Kelvin and Ludwig for boys and Juno, Valencia and Willow upped the game for girls.
Thankfully, Chrissy and John are more down to earth than most celebrities and chose the names Luna and Miles for their children.
"It was a very beautiful night, really big, vivid red moon, and just gorgeous," she said. "I have this love for space and I think about space camp all the time, and my days at space camp as a youngster. And so I just thought Luna was perfect."
And what was she trying to convince her husband for their son's name? When Ellen DeGeneres hosted the former model on her show to talk baby, Teigen explained:
"I've been toying with Dick Legend a lot," Teigen said. ".. .Can we say that? Richard Legend."
Both John and Ellen nixed that option right away. Chrissy also gave John the option to name his son after him. According to Teigen, her husband replied that he did not want the baby to have the pressure to live up to him.
6 John's Fine, Guys
Teigen posted a photo of herself and husband John Legend shortly after giving birth, jokingly captioning it, “To everyone asking, John is healing perfectly.” While most fathers obviously carry a load of responsibility while raising a child, the post-birth experience is dramatically different for women and for men. It’s not surprising that carrying a living being for nine months and delivering him or her into the world is going to take a bit of time to recover from. While many couples give friends and family an update just hours after giving birth, it truly takes months to recover. “While many women feel mostly recovered by six to eight weeks, it may take longer than this to feel like yourself again. During this time, you may feel as though your body has turned against you,” according to the organization, Family Doctor. Doctors urge new mothers to be attentive to what their bodies are telling them, if you need rest— take it. Even if your days consist solely of eating, sleeping and taking care of your new infant, that’s enough.
5 TMI In The Best Way
It is an aspect of childbirth that every woman fears. How much am I going to rip? How many stitches will I need? How is this baby going to fit through such a small opening?
When Chrissy Tweeted, what seems to be the most real and TMI filled Tweet, after giving birth to her son Miles, mothers from all over shared their experience.
“Welcome to the 4th-degree tear club ... it’s a journey ... anyone else here, we have a group on Facebook ... 4th degree tear support group,” wrote one mom.
While others shared more explicit (and slightly humorous) details about what giving birth did to their body.
“My baby boy will be 25 in August and my butt still hurts.”
In an interview with Health magazine, Christine Greves, MD, an ob-gyn at the Orlando Health Hospital in Florida, explained exactly what happened to Teigen's body when she gave birth to Luna.
"First-degree lacerations involve injuries to the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the perineum (the area between the anus and the vulva) and v, and they typically heal on their own. Second-degree tears are perhaps the most common, and they affect deeper tissue of the v. Third and fourth-degree lacerations are more serious, and it’s clear one of the two happened during Luna’s birth."
Tearing is something that can make any woman shudder at the thought of it happening no matter the degree.
4 From Model To Walking Breastpump
We all know pregnancy and giving birth does some crazy things to a woman's body, inside and out. From being constantly tired, to weight that you just can't seem to lose, to showering when you have a minute (which let's be honest may not be every day). For celebrities it is no different, they can go from "Red carpet Wow!" to "Whoa! Did you just roll out of bed?"
“Anyone in the public eye, we have all the help we could ever need to be able to shed everything. So I think people get this jaded sensation that everybody’s losing [pregnancy weight] so quickly, but we just happen to be the ones who are out there. We have nutritionists, we have dietitians, we have trainers, we have our own schedules, we have nannies. We have people who make it possible for us to get back into shape. But nobody should feel like that’s normal, or like that’s realistic.” ― Chrissy in an interview with Parents magazine
Becoming a mother also means that sometimes you just have to watch your baby sleep or take the time to breastfeed or prepare bottle after bottle after bottle, all while trying to watch the entire Netflix repertoire of shows and movies.
3 Trolling The Met Gala
Becoming a parent, especially a first-time parent, one learns that they had it easy before they had to care for a helpless, tiny human. Life begins to change. Daily struggles no longer revolve around you, but around what is bothering your child, what they need to grow, the tools they need to learn. The former model's husband has learned this:
"It just takes over your life when you have a child ... I spent a lot of time at home with her for the first three months and with my wife, you know, it just humbles you. I think everyone struggles with being a new parent, everyone’s trying to figure it out and I think it’s a humbling process.” ― John Legend in an interview with Parent magazine.
Being a "5 foot 9" walking feeding machine also demands a lot of patience from both mother and baby, and of course Teigen had something to cover that aspect of motherhood:
"I just think it’s so funny. Sometimes I’m Googling how to do it better. I’m like, ‘Is it working? Is it taking? I don’t think I’m feeling enough pain!’ You just get so confused about how it’s supposed to feel, and as hard as anyone said it was, I feel like it somehow managed to be harder.”
Although they were new parents at the time of this ultra real Tweet, we think they got a hang of parenting and that they are doing a great job!
2 Tearing Truths
All mothers that have given vaginal birth can and will appreciate this simple gift more then any newborn size onesie.
Doctors and mothers will agree that going number 1 in the bathroom after giving birth can burn horribly. Doctors recommend using, to put it nicely, a squirt bottle, or as Teigen has pointed out "have you EVER heard of a grosser name for a product, EVER???" True. The official name can make some women squirm out of grossness. I mean it sounds like something you would use as an underground grass watering system.
The squirt bottle is filled with warm water to clean and dilute the urine as the woman urinates. As gross as this all sounds, the little plastic bottle is a Godsend.
Other ways to start healing your body after giving birth include:
- Take it easy on your body. Get sleep, get rest and allow yourself to be waited on a bit, like the goddess you are!
- Use a perineal irrigation bottle (like a squirt water bottle) until you feel better. Dousing yourself during and after urinating can ease any burning and keep the area clean to avoid infection. Then, pat gently with clean toilet paper or a baby wipe. Don’t rub.
- Applying an ice pack, sitting on pillows, using sanitary pads with witch hazel, and soaking in a sitz bath – with water just deep enough to cover your tender areas – can all help to ease pain.
- If the pain is too bothersome, over-the-counter ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help (aspirin can increase bleeding), if you are breastfeeding, always ask your baby’s healthcare provider before taking anything. Some doctors also recommend a numbing spray.
1 Two Birds, One Stone?
Sometimes being a mother means taking the opportunity to do as many things at a time as you possibly can. For Chrissy, that might even include combining her giving birth with some, um, personal grooming. No, not really, but Chrissy is onto something that all mothers, new and old, think about: time management. It feels as if there are absolutely not enough hours in the day when you have kids. From doctor’s appointments to playdates, to school— mothers often feel lucky if they have a moment of peace while drinking their morning coffee.
A recent study found that on average mothers get just 17 minutes per day to themselves, according to Daily Mail. More than 2,000 American mothers were surveyed and the findings probably don’t surprise any one who is raising a child. More than half of those women said their own bedroom is just about the only place to catch a little rest and relaxation.
"But having just over 15 minutes to themselves each day isn't enough and partners and other family members need to appreciate the lengths she goes to for the family and try to see she gets more,” a spokesperson for the research company said.
You know what that means, ladies: don’t hesitate to take time when you need it, your sanity will be thanking you for it in the end.
