With everything that is said and written about Angelina Jolie, you would think that her fans know her very well, but that’s not the case at all. Of course with Angie, what you see isn’t always what you get. Angelina Jolie is an actress, a humanitarian, and yes, she’s also a public figure. But the role that is most important to her is one that people rarely get to see her in, and that’s her role as a mother to her six children.
The Jolie-Pitt clan has seen a lot of changes in their personal lives these last few years. But no matter what is written about the Jolie-Pitt family in the gossip blogs and tabloid headlines, one thing is for certain: Angelina and Brad do whatever it takes to make sure that their children and their needs always come first. They know their split will affect the children the most. Life as they once knew it is changing it’s Angie who wants to make sure that their lives remain stable and most of all, well-grounded. Here are just a few ways she’s been making that happen in the last year alone.
20 The Boys Are Teens Now!
We can’t believe it, but both Maddox and Pax Jolie-Pitt look like full grown teenage boys now. Before you know it, they will be taking their tests for their driver’s licenses and then applying for college in no time. And we have to admit, they are growing up pretty handsome, too! Angelina has said before, “The moment you have a child, in an instant your life is not for you, and your life is completely, 100 percent dedicated to another human being, and they will always come first. It changes you forever. It changes your perspective, and it gives you a nice purpose and focus.”
19 Still Traveling The World
Angelina and her children are still doing what they do best, and that’s travel the world together. A month doesn’t go by in which Angie and the kids aren't zig-zagging the world or country hopping from one destination to the next. What an exciting, jet-setting life they lead!
"We travel and I'm the first person to say, 'get the school work done as quickly as possible because let's go out and explore,'" Angelina told The Independent in June 2011.
"I'd rather them go to a museum and learn to play guitar and read and pick a book they love." And they still get up to lots of fun while at home, too...
18 She Cares Most About Giving Them Stability
Angelina Jolie has often been criticized for not giving her children enough stability in their lives. That doesn’t seem to be the case anymore.
While they still do a lot of traveling, they also live most of the time at home in California.
It’s their home base now. Angelina has said in the past, “I've realized that being happy is a choice. You never want to rub anybody the wrong way or not be fun to be around, but you have to be happy. When I get logical and I don't trust my instincts - That’s when I get in trouble.”
17 Angie Takes Them To Pick Up Groceries
As they say, the family that shops together, stays together, right? Well, in this instance Angelina Jolie likes to take her kids grocery shopping to their local Whole Foods as a family. Picking out what to eat for dinner and making healthy choices seems to be the norm for the Jolie-Pitt kids.
Could you imagine bumping into someone like Angie and her kids while trying to pick out your favorite brand of gluten-free bread at the store?
We can only imagine how some of the Whole Foods shoppers must have felt while seeing Angie and her kids at the check-out.
16 Trip To The Louvre
Just this past year Angelina Jolie and her kids made a very special visit to Paris to see the Louvre together. Looking at these photos, we can’t believe how much the kids have grown up in the past year! It seems like half of them are already teenagers, even though we still remember them as small babies. Wow, time sure does go by fast.
"The center of my life is my kids," Jolie told the Los Angeles Times.
"I woke up at 3 in the morning with four kids with jet lag and two babies. I put myself together for a few hours and go out. And then I go home. This is my job."
15 Bonding As a Family
A lot of people like to point out that Angelina doesn’t spend much time with her friends or with any of her outside family members. And while we definitely don’t know what is going on behind closed doors, we do know this much: Angelina loves to bond with her kids. She always puts them first in her life.
"We want to make sure we don't build a family so big that we don't have absolutely enough time to raise them each really well," the actress told Vanity Fair.
"Children are clearly a commitment, a bigger commitment [than marriage]. It's for life."
14 Drama-Free Life?
Sure, there might be a lot of reports and speculation about Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s separation in the media right now. We’ve all seen the headlines, haven’t we? But it looks like Angie is doing her best to protect her kids from the storm. From what we can tell, she is living a very drama free life behind closed doors. What’s more, she doesn’t want her children to see her break down.
Angelina has said, “I think it's very important to cry in the shower and not in front of them. They need to know that everything's going to be all right, even when you're not sure it is.”
13 They Are Homeschooled
It’s no secret that Angelina Jolie likes to homeschool her children. And as part of their curriculum, Angelina likes to teach her children about the world. After all, they are a very international family! Angie once told Elle Magazine, “For instance, I’m the only person in my house who was born in America… It’s only because we are a country based on people of different backgrounds and faiths coming together that I can have this family. My daughters have the freedoms they have because of being American. And we are at our best when we are fighting for others to have the same rights. Particularly other women.”
12 They Go To The Flea Market
You’d think that Angelina Jolie would have a team of assistants to run her day-to-day errands for her. And while there’s no doubt that she does have a lot of help, she likes to do everyday stuff with her kids, too. Just this past summer she was spotted shopping at a Malibu flea market with her children. Everyone looked like they were having a blast. She joked with Total Film magazine that she's remained humble in motherhood:
"The great thing about having a bunch of kids is that they just remind you that you're the person who takes them to go poop. That's who you are!"
11 They Take Hikes
Angelina Jolie the hiker? She might not seem like the athletic type these days, but let’s not forget that Angie’s claim to fame was playing the original Lara Croft in the early 2000’s. And it looks like Angie still has it in her, as she went on a hike with her kids over the summer. In other words, she's still a fit mama! Angelina once said, “I do believe in the old saying, 'What does not kill you makes you stronger.' Our experiences, good and bad, make us who we are. By overcoming difficulties, we gain strength and maturity.”
10 They Do Everything As A Family
Angelina Jolie has made it no secret that she didn’t have much of a family life when she was growing up. Her parents divorced when she was young and she had a very turbulent relationship with her father, Jon Voight. So it’s no wonder that she always puts her family first, everywhere she goes. "With my family, I'm trying to raise them to have respect for all people and make friends around the world and feel at home with the world and really live a truly global [life] because I think it's what forms them and it's really important to me," the actress told StarPulse.
9 Angie Takes Them Shopping
While Angelina Jolie has full-time custody of her six children she is making sure to spend as much time with them as she can. Sure, she might be a famous Hollywood actress and one of the biggest names in the industry, but that won’t stop her from taking her girls on a trip to Paul Smith for a little retail therapy. One source told Us Weekly, “The girls were nice, polite and cute. Angelina shook my hand when she entered the store."
"It was genuinely a girls’ day out and they were into reading everything and looking at everything. Angelina seemed relaxed and she’s definitely a very hands-on person.”
8 They Hit The Red Carpet
With that being said, Angelina Jolie also loves to bring her kids to work with her. We already know that she likes to bring them on movie sets and have them travel with her wherever she goes. Well, apparently, she also likes to bring them on the red carpet, too!
Angelina is a proud mother, especially whenever she has all six Jolie-Pitt kids with her in front of the cameras.
And we must say, they surely are one very good-looking family. Talk about being blessed in the gene pool, right? Shiloh is the spitting image of her father while twins Vivienne and Knox look exactly like their mom Angie.
7 They Can Count On Mom's Support
There’s no doubt that being a single mother has to be very difficult. Sure, Brad Pitt gets to see the kids too, but it’s not the same as it was before. Everything is on Angie’s shoulders. With that being said, though, she stays strong to make sure that they can always count on their mother’s support. "I take my kids to school and if I go to work they visit me on set, I come home. I have dinner with my family. I have breakfast with my family. I have a very solid, a very warm home. I'm fortunate," she told Ann Curry in 2007.
6 Keeping Their Distance From The Paparazzi
While there’s no doubt that the paparazzi like to follow the Jolie-Pitts everywhere they go, Angelina makes an effort to stay away from the photographers whenever she can. But at the same time, she does know that as a celebrity in the entertainment industry, there’s only so much she can do to stay away from the limelight. She knows that it’s all part of her job and yes, a downside to the million-dollar paychecks that she gets from her Hollywood films. When the kids do see the photogs though, they do their best not to respond to them. They keep their heads down and ignore them.
5 Avoiding The Press
The same, of course, can also be said about the press. At this point, the Jolie-Pitt kids are old enough to google their parents' name and read about some of the questionable and maybe controversial stuff that they have done in the past (Angie sure has a lot to explain, now doesn’t she?). And as much as she tries to control what is said and reported in the press, she can’t do the same when it comes to the blogs and the tabloid media. Angelina knows that they are going to print what they want to print, and that’s why she ignores them.
4 Angie's Low Key Hollywood Life
There are likely a very few people in this world who don’t know who Angelina Jolie is. But despite her status in the entertainment industry, she actually has a very low key Hollywood lifestyle. She doesn’t go out and she definitely doesn’t hit any parties. Angie once told Cosmo, “Figure out who you are separate from your family, and the man or woman you're in a relationship with. Find who you are in this world and what you need to feel good alone."
"I think that's the most important thing in life. Find a sense of self because, with that, you can do anything else.”
3 She's Not Working As Much
While Angelina still manages to capture the world with her presence everywhere she goes, she’s been taking it pretty easy when it comes to her Hollywood workload. In other words, she’s been spending more time at home with her kids than on movie sets. But if there’s one thing she does love to do, it’s work and collaborate with her kids! Many of her kids have actually appeared in movies with her. And from what we can tell, it’s always been a positive experience for everyone.
“[She’s] fun, funny, and easy to work with,” Maddox once said about his mom (via People). “She’s a wonder.”
2 She's Focusing On Her Mom Life
About 15 years ago no one would have thought that Angelina Jolie would ever be a stay-at-home mom. But believe it or not, she is now. And she loves to watch her kids grow and learn at home, too.
“He’s quite capable and always takes me by surprise,” she says proudly about her son Maddox to People Magazine.
“He’s been practicing flying, then they called me the other day and said, ‘So Mad can go solo,’ and I nearly dropped the phone! He’s been taking French and Russian and all these different languages. I hear him talking in full, fluent French, and they’ll tell me he’s reached a certain level in his German, and I have no idea. He doesn’t do it in front of me.”
1 Still No Brad, Though
While fans still get to see photos of Angelina Jolie and her kids from time to time, the same can’t be said about their father, Brad Pitt. But that doesn’t mean he isn’t around. He sees the kids, but he manages to do it without the paparazzi on his tail.
“Brad is doing great,” a source close to the actor tells People Magazine.
“He has his energy back. He is a great dad and always loved being with his kids. He doesn’t talk badly about Angie, but he feels it’s her fault that the kids don’t want to spend more time with him.”
