Before the fame, Jon and Kate Gosselin were just two normal people, living normal lives.

Jon Gosselin, who was working as an IT Analyzer, and Kate, who was working as a nurse, first met back in fall of 1997 during a company picnic.

It was an instant attraction for the both of them as they locked eyes.

They were married a year and a half later on June 12, 1999.

The two rose to fame a few years later after Kate gave birth to the third living sextuplet crew to be born in the United States.

First, their fame came as local news, but then it grew after the kids turned a year old. First by getting a few specials on the Discovery Health network, then getting their own reality television show Jon & Kate Plus 8.

The fame was so much though, and having their lives filmed constantly caused a lot of tension between the couple. They would later divorce in 2009.

Since then the couple has moved on and tried to do what is the best for their children and themselves. The bonds that were once strong though, have deteriorated and the couple no longer has love or patience for one another, causing stress not only among themselves but also their children.

Here are 20 facts about the Jon and Kate Gosselin, their children, and their lives since filming started.

20 Who Is Jon Gosselin?

Jonathan Keith Gosselin, born April 1, 1977 in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania and who graduated from Wyomissing High School in 1995, is the middle child of a family of three. According to en.wikipedia.org, Jon’s mom, Pamela Castello, is a second-generation Korean American, while his father, Thomas Gosselin, was of French, Irish and Welsh descent.

Jon first entered the spotlight after his wife at the time, Kate Gosselin, gave birth to their sextuplets in 2004. According to marriedbiography.com, at first all they received is local media coverage after Kate gave birth, it wasn’t until the babies turned 17 months old that Discovery Health contacted them with an offer to do a reality television show about their lives, Surviving Sextuplets, and Twins, which first aired in September 2005. A year later and the family went on to do another special, Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later. On April 4, 2007, Discovery Health decided to air another series about the large family called, Jon & Kate Plus 8. The show aired two seasons before being moved to the network TLC, which it then became the networks highest-rated program. The fifth-season alone brought in a record of 9.8 million viewers, according to Wikipedia. The show ended though after Jon and Kate divorced in 2009. The final episode aired on November 23, 2009.

Jon Gosselin is not only known for his television appearance though, he is also on The New York Times Best Seller list for his book, which he co-wrote, “Multiple Blessings: Surviving to Thriving with Twins and Sextuplets.”

As of now he works as a DJ and prefers to stay out of the limelight.

19 Who Is Kate Gosselin?

Kate Irene Kreider Gosselin, born March 28, 1975 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the second born child of Charlene Ruth Kreider and Kenton Eugene Kreider, they had a total of four girls and one boy, according to en.wikipedia.org.

Before Kate got her time in the spotlight, she became a registered nurse after graduating from Reading Hospital and Medical center in Reading, Pennsylvania. After receiving her diploma, she moved out to Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, where she became a labor and delivery nurse.

Like Jon, Kate first entered the spotlight when Discovery Health contacted them to do a special called, Surviving Sextuplets and Twins, which aired in 2005. The show caught so much interest that the network decided to do another special called, Sextuplets and Twins: One Year Later. After the specials produced such high ratings, the network went on to do a whole show called, Jon & Kate Plus 8, which moved to the network TLC after two seasons. It aired for a total of three more seasons on TLC, before being canceled in 2009 after the couple’s divorce.

After Jon & Kate Plus 8 went off the air, Kate went on to a spin-off of the show in 2010 called, Kate Plus 8, this time focusing on taking care of her eight children while being a divorced mom. The show was halted that same year for a while though when Jon and his lawyers began to fight to get the show canceled.

In 2011 the show picked back up for a second season but was later canceled that same year. It wasn’t until 2014 that TLC would ask Kate and her family to do a reunion special. TLC would later in 2015 pick the show back up for the third season, and it has been going smoothly ever since with its sixth season ending in 2017.

Kate has also done other appearances on other televisions shows such as co-hosting The View, Dancing With the Stars, and even The Apprentice.

She is the co-writer of Multiple Blessings: Surviving to Thriving with Twins and Sextuplets, which was released in 2008, and writer of three other books called, Eight Little Faces, which was released in 2009, I Just Want You to Know, which was released in 2010, and Love is in the Mix, which was released in 2013.

In 2018 it was announced by TLC that she will be staring in a new show called, Kate Plus Date.

18 Marriage And Then Divorce

When it comes to Kate and Jon Gosselin, most fans know all about their messy divorce. Not many people know about how they met though. That is one thing that the couple has kept tightly locked.

What we do know though is that they first locked eyes on October 5, 1997, during a company picnic. It was instant love for the two and they went on to marry on June 12, 1999.

After the birth of their sextuplets, the couple entered the spotlight. Being in the public eye and having everything aired for the world to see would later be the end of their relationship and lead to their divorce in 2009, according to en.wikipedia.org.

Their divorce was announced on an episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8, which aired on June 22, 2009. They stated in the episode that their eight children would remain in the home in Pennsylvania and that they would be moving back and forth to accommodate the custody agreement.

Over the years things got worse between the two and as of now Jon only gets to see four of his kids at one time, which most of them never want to go stay with him.

17 Welcoming Twins

As soon as Kate and Jon Gosselin married on June 12, 1999, according to en.wikipedia.org, the two began to try to have a child. Unfortunately for Kate though, she has what is called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, a disease that affects a woman from getting pregnant naturally with a child. This is what led her to seek out fertility treatments. With the help of Intrauterine Insemination, Kate was able to get pregnant.

Jon and Kate Gosselin welcomed two little twin girls on October 8, 2000, at The Reading Hospital and Medical Center. The little girls, named Cara, who weighed five pounds and three ounces and who was born at 5:41 p.m., and Madelyn, who weighed five pounds and one ounce and was born at 5:47 p.m., were at 35 weeks gestation at the time of their birth, meaning they were born five weeks premature.

When Cara was born she had what is known as a Hemangioma on the side of her nose, which according to Wikipedia is a noncancerous growth that forms due to an abnormal collection of blood vessels. Kate would tell the girls that it was from an angel’s kiss. When Cara left heaven first, an angel with red lipstick kissed her, but by the time Madelyn was ready to leave, the angel’s lipstick had worn off and that is why she doesn’t have the mark from her kiss. As Cara got older, the Hemangioma went away on its own.

16 Hello To Six More

After the birth of Jon and Kate Gosselin’s twins, Jon did not want any more kids. When Kate brought up that she wanted to try for one more, he was against it, according to en.wikipedia.org. He came around though and they decided to seek out the help of fertility treatments again, which is how they became pregnant the first time with their twins.

You could imagine the shock the two had when they found out that Kate was pregnant with not just one baby, but six.

On May 10, 2004, Kate gave birth to her six new babies, Alexis, Hannah, Aaden, Collin, Leah, and Joel, at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. The sextuplets were just shy of 30 weeks gestation. Giving birth 10 weeks premature is a common situation for mothers who are having more than one baby due to fertility treatments.

Because the babies were born so early though, their lungs had not yet developed properly, resulting in them having to be placed on ventilators for a while.

Kate wrote in one of her books that very early on in her pregnancy they found out that they had started out with seven embryos. One of the embryos did not develop though.

15 Cops Called Over A Baby Sitter

It was in 2009 that Cops were called to the Gosselin family home. At the time, Jon and Kate Gosselin were still sharing the home that their kids lived in. When one parent had time with the children, they would stay at the house, while the other would stay elsewhere.

It was a Thursday night when the police came to the Gosselin home in Wernersville, Pa due to Kate and Jon having a verbal argument outside the home. It was a source close to Kate that confirmed to People that Kate was the one that called the police.

“Police got there and calmed the situation down,” an officer told PEOPLE. “No one was arrested, and no citations were issued.”

Another source told People that Kate called the house to find out what babysitter was helping with the children. She did not approve of the caretaker, and that is when an argument started.

“Due to the custody agreement, Kate couldn’t enter the property,” the source says. “The cops had no choice but to tell Kate she couldn’t go past the gate.”

Kate left the property distraught and in tears. Kate, who would rather not have her emotional life broadcasted to the public, had this to say to People:

“I cry all the time, in numerous airports, in airplanes. It’s not like I can put the tears on hold. So, I try to cry very incognito, behind my sunglasses. And after those tears, there’s always the feeling of, ‘how did I get here?’”

14 How An Orthodontist Visit Turned Into A Show Down

It was during a visit to the orthodontist office in August 2017, when Jon, who has shared custody of his 8 children, and Kate Gosselin, who has full legal custody, would break out into a heated argument that would then result in the police being called.

A spokesperson for the Wyomissing Police Department came forward and told ET that the fight started over the custody of their 13-year-old daughter.

"The call came in at 1:10 this afternoon for a verbal domestic argument ... over the custody of one of their 13-year-old daughters," the spokesperson said. "No one was arrested, and the daughter did go home with the father after she expressed that was her desire to do.”

“There was a fairly lengthy argument as far as both parents had conflicting versions of a child custody agreement," the spokesperson added. "Basically, both stated something different and we referred the matter over to our county district attorney. The district attorney then reviewed it and ... the district attorney's words were that the order was sufficiently vague to interpret who was supposed to have custody today. Both parents read their version of the order and thought they should have had custody of the child today. So, we referred them back to the court system to try and get clarification from the court system on who's supposed to have the child on certain days.”

Once the issue was resolved, Police escorted Kate out of the building.

The fight wasn’t over though.

Jon wound up having to call the police again after he claimed that a friend of Kate, who is a lawyer, was threatening him with legal action. By the time Police arrived though, they were both gone, and no further action was taken, according to etonline.com.

13 Cops And A Trip To The Hospital

A day after cops were called to a local orthodontist’s office, they are called yet again to Kate Gosselin's home after her 13-year-old daughter she shares with ex-husband, Jon Gosselin, refused to go home.

The exchange resulted in not only the cops being called, but also an ambulance, after Jon’s daughter Hannah said that her arm had been injured during the confrontation.

The exchange took place in a parking lot off a Pennsylvania Highway. The incident was caught completely on camera and In Touch received an exclusive word for word account of the entire ordeal.

“No! Stop, please stop! Let go of me, Mommy!” Hannah screamed at Kate at one point.

Kate responded by telling her daughter that she was going to pull her out of the car if she didn’t get out. During this time, Jon was heard telling his daughter to fight her and to hold on to the car if she didn’t want to go.

“Hold on. Hold on. If you don’t want to go, don’t go. I can’t help you. Hold on. Hold on,” Jon, 40, said in the account of the incident.

The whole event lasted three hours. It finally came to an ending after police called for the ambulance for Hannah. When they arrived at the hospital though, the argument continued.

“Kate told the police she thought Jon was a danger and Hannah needed to be protected. So, the police removed Jon while Hannah was being treated,” an insider stated.

The source went on to explain that on August 11, 2017, a judge at an emergency hearing awarded Jon equal custody of Hannah after Hannah refused to go back to Kate’s house.

12 False Accusations Of An Angry Ex-Wife

When it comes to Jon Gosselin and his former wife, it is clear as day that these two have nothing but hate for one another now. The two can’t seem to do a simple drop off without fighting and having the cops called.

It was April 24, 2015, when Kate went down to the police station to file a police report on her now ex-husband, Jon Gosselin.

In the police report, obtained by In Touch Weekly, Kate claims that her ex-husband took one of their sextuplet daughters, Hannah, after he picked her up from school.

She went on to say that not only did he take their daughter, but he also uses his Disc Jockey career as a cover for being into more devious things.

The Sheriff’s office advised her to call for an emergency custody hearing, and she did. The court found no evidence though to support any of Kate’s accusations, a source told In Touch.

“Jon didn't even know all of what Kate had accused him of until he saw the police report himself,” the source said.

“He believes Kate will stop at nothing to get what she wants - even if it means lying to police. She has no boundaries.” The source continued to tell In Touch. “He had no idea at the time that she accused him of having an inappropriate relationship with Hannah. He was upset when he found out.”

11 The Estrangement From His Kids

When Jon and Kate Gosselin went through a very public divorce in 2009, it ended with Kate getting primary custody of their 8 kids, all who live with her now in Pennsylvania.

According to ET, Jon had this to say about his estrangement to his kids.

"Everybody used to come to my house," Jon explains. "You know, it was great, and then Madelyn and Cara just stopped coming, around 12-13 years old. I didn't question it. I was just like, 'Hey, do what you want, be with your friends' and then it just became they're not coming."

"Then I had six [kids]," he says. "I was just focusing on the ones that did come and then a couple years went by and then Collin stopped coming. I thought, maybe he just wants to do stuff with Mommy or whatever, and then it became long term."

"I haven't seen all eight of my kids together probably in three years. Three to four years," Jon claims, adding that he hasn’t seen Collin in two years. "The kids that I do get are Hannah, Leah, Joel, and Aaden. I guess the four have stuck together and said, ‘We're going to Daddy's and that's it.’ And maybe they'll raise a stink about it or something like that. Sometimes I get Alexis but not often. Madelyn and Cara, I don't see that much, or often. We're kind of not talking right now."

A relationship with his children is not the only one lacking. Jon also claims that since his divorce, he and Kate don’t have a relationship anymore either.

"I don't really talk to my ex-wife, so it's all kind of helter-skelter," he says. "I have my life and she has her life. We have our life with our kids separately. We don't go anywhere together."

In the end, Jon would love to build back up his relationship with his kids, especially his daughters Madelyn and Cara.

"They're moving into womanhood," he notes. "They'll be 16 in October. I hope I can talk to them and develop a relationship in the future. But there's a lot of stuff that has to go on before that."

10 The Lawsuit Because The Child Loves Him More

It was learned recently that Kate is taking Jon back to court to him for, well let's just say, way more money than he actually has.

According to Hollywoodgossip.com, in the newly obtained documents filed by the courts, Kate is demanding every penny he has, plus extra due to a breach of contract.

Jon isn’t taking this sitting down though and has begun to fight her.

In the documents, it was stated that Kate is asking for a whopping $132, 875, a number that is so specific that some are thinking maybe Jon owes her child support money.

In the filing made by the court, Jon’s attorney stated that Kate’s six-figure demand is “an inappropriate amount,” and calls into question Kate’s assertion that Jon owes her anything. It also says that the lawsuit does “not provide any proof of the language of that agreement.”

You know how you can't sue someone for breach of contract without an actual contract?

Jon’s response to all this is that he believes Kate is seeking “child support arrears.”

Back payment would be due if he was to ever file a petition to modify custody.

Some are starting to believe that due to the timing of this lawsuit, Kate may be perhaps suing Jon to get back at him for how much time he has been spending with their one sextuplet daughter, Hannah.

Due to how much time they have been together lately, many believe that Jon and Hannah are now living together.

So, the question to all this is….

Is Kate’s lawsuit over Jon spending so much time with Hannah, and even Collin? Or does he genuinely owe her?

9 Kate's New Show, "Kate Plus Date"

Well, according to foxnews.com, Kate is about to get a new show called, Kate Plus Date.

It was reported by People in April that Kate’s new dating reality show will be appearing on TLC this fall.

Kate had this to say about her new show:

“I’m nervous, I’m excited, and I’m forcing myself to do this,” she told the magazine.

“As we’re talking about Mady and Cara going off to college which is becoming more and more of a reality, it’s going to happen, it almost became like a worry for them, too, like ‘Mommy, you’re going to be all alone soon,’” Gosselin said.

“But it was very apparent, now that they’re older and talking about dating and how they’re all going to get married someday … it became apparent: they want someone for me. They want me to have somebody in my life,” she continued.

“If I’m going to date someone, I can’t just go out on a date — it’s creepy to me to think of just going out somewhere with some stranger, and so I actually feel like doing it like this is the best and safest way for me to go on a date — a camera crew will be there! I’ll be safe!” she told People. “And the person will have been vetted by a matchmaker.”

She then went on to talk about the relationship she wants the man she chooses to have with her children and how she wants her kids to feel about him.

She said, “I would love my kids to have a mutual friendship and respect with this guy and for him to be someone they can ask for advice. It would be great for my kids to have someone they can feel like is a real friend.”

8 "He Doesn't Even Know Us"

When it comes to the relationship between Jon Gosselin and his fraternal twin daughters, Madelyn and Cara, one thing remains clear, there isn’t one.

Jon Gosselin remains to this day, estranged from his twin girls, though he did wish them this pass October a Happy Birthday via Instagram.

Kate and Jon Gosselin divorced in 2009, and according to people.com, Jon has been focusing on his DJing career and getting custody of his 8 children since then.

But in August 2016, Mady and Cara told People in an interview that they were no longer speaking to their father, who had just got done doing a few interviews with some media outlets recently about his strained relationship with the girls.

The girls had this to say about their father and how he talked about them in his interviews:

“He makes it seem like we’re being kept from him, which is insane,” Mady said. “He should maybe spend some time thinking about why we don’t want to see him, and maybe realize that if he ever does want a relationship with us, talking about us on TV is not the way to make that happen.”

“He doesn’t even know us,” she added. “How can he dare to talk about us?”

7 Expelled From School

It was in 2010 when hollywoodlife.com announced that Collin and Alexis Gosselin, two of the sextuplet children, had been expelled from private school due to bad behavior. After their expulsion, it was learned that the pair were doing great and that they were both being homeschooled by their mother, Kate Gosselin. A source told Radaronline.com, “The two kids are doing a lot better. It seems like they are happier now that they are receiving more attention to meet their needs.”

The source went on to say, “Both Collin and Alexis are happy that they are enjoying spending more time with their mother, and also their dog Shoka, who has returned to the house.”

Even Jon Gosselin, their father, is happy with their improvement and homeschooling structure that Kate was giving the children.

Kate told Entertainment Tonight during an interview, “Two of my children are being tutored at home, with a teacher who is working closely with our kindergarten teachers in school, doing the identical curriculum. The pressure was getting to them… You have the divorce anger mixed in with that. They needed some breathing time. The goal is to get them back into school as soon as possible.”

6 Why Collin Got Sent Away

Being a single parent is hard, more so if there is more than one child. Now imagine how hard it must be on Kate Gosselin as she tries to raise her eight children to best of her ability, while also giving them everything they want and need. It can be hard.

One thing that Kate has been open with is her struggles with her son Collin, one of the sextuplet children.

It was on an episode of Kate Plus 8 in 2015, according to intouchweekly.com, that Kate would reveal that Collin was experiencing some educational and social challenges.

“This is a work in progress for him that we’ve sought many specialists help on. There are changes coming for him. I think it will result in a change of school for him for this upcoming year and beyond that, we’ll see," Kate said at the time.

Those are not all the issues though. In her book, I Just Want You to Know, that was released in 2010, Kate revealed that she also had issues handling Collin.

In her book she wrote this letter to her son:

“As you have grown, however, I must say you have also challenged my authority greatly,” Kate wrote. “At two and a half, you began testing and trying my parenting at every chance. I called Daddy at work many days crying because you would not obey. I had to ask you every day, ‘Who’s in charge here: you or me?’ You would reluctantly answer, ‘You are.’ As you have grown, this has not changed. You continue to be determined to do what you want to do, and I continue to try to rein you in.”

A few months later she revealed that she sent Collin away to a treatment center that would be able to help with his special needs.

5 Was He Finally Awarded Custody?

Jon Gosselin has been spending the last three years of his life trying to get custody of his daughter Hannah, one of the sextuplet girls. He first filed papers to get custody of her in 2015, after Hannah expressed that she was unhappy and uncomfortable in her mother’s house.

Fans are wondering if he was finally awarded it though after his Instagram account had been recently a bunch of pictures of the two together.

From what inquisitr.com has gathered, the two recently shared a week-long road trip together.

In the original custody agreement that Jon has with his ex-wife Kate Gosselin, the agreement states that Jon is only allowed to see four of his children at one time. E! News confirmed that this year, Jon spent his birthday, which was also Easter Sunday, with just Hannah and none of his other children.

With the recent flood of new pictures of him and Hannah, it appears that something defiantly changed with his custody agreement, but don’t expect Jon to tell us. When it comes to custody of his children, Jon has made it very clear that it is nobody’s business.

4 Collin's 14th Birthday Party

It seems unreal that Kate and Jon Gosselin’s sextuplets are now 14.

As mentioned earlier, Kate sent her son, Collin Gosselin, away a few years ago to treatment center to deal with his special needs. Since then, he has been rarely seen.

On May 12, 2018, Jon Gosselin shared a photo of Collin, himself, and his daughter Hannah, as they celebrated Collin’s 14th birthday.

In photo fans can see Collin, his dad, and his sister, all smiling big as they pose next to a cake and some pizza. Jon captioned the photo with his message:

“Glad I could celebrate my son Collin’s 14th birthday with him and his sister!”

3 Jon Gosselin The Dancer?

When it comes to celebrating a birthday, Jon Gosselin sure knows how to do that. The ex-reality star recently celebrated his 40th birthday by participating in an event called the “Untamed Male Revue” at the Dusk Nightclub in Atlantic City.

He had been planning this for weeks and it had been announced that he would be making multiple appearances on stage and even stripping for the audience. He even claimed to have lost 25 pounds in preparation for his big debut as a stripper.

During the night he danced to a few songs, some including, “Pony” by Ginuwine and “SexyBack” by Justin Timberlake, but according to E! News, he never actually stripped. In fact, when he took his shirt off, he was wearing a tank underneath that had a picture of six pack abs drawn on it.

"I never said I was going to strip!" he told E! News at the end of the show.

The audience was not discouraged though. One lady even went so far as to stick a 100$ bill down his pants.

"To my family, I apologize," he reportedly said during the show.

2 "Behave Or Be Sent Away!"

As stated in a past post, Alex and Collin, who were six at the time, had been expelled from their private school back in 2010 due to misbehavior. After the event though, Kate Gosselin was reported telling her eight children how they would never get into Heaven if they keep misbehaving and how Jesus doesn’t love bad people. According to a source who told Us Weekly, she continued her rant by also telling them that they would be sent away like their dogs, Shoka and Nala, if they didn’t change their behavior.

Instead of trying to find out the real reason they are acting out and helping them, you threaten them with sending them away?

Just by watching how their lives have been since basically they were born, fans can see that they are obviously acting out because of the parent’s divorce and the pressure of being filmed 24/7.

Kate wants to blame everyone else though for her problems and the way her kids are.

“Jon blames Kate for not being home,” says the insider. “He says they’re hitting because that’s how Kate taught them to deal with problems — yelling and hitting.”

Lets not forget Kate’s constant jabs at Jon while filming on the interview couch for Jon & Kate Plus 8.

1 Can Being On Camera Hurt A Child?

Back in 2010, Collin and Alexis Gosselin, two children from the sextuplet crew, were expelled from school for misbehaving. After the incident, hollywoodlife.com sat down with experts to ask them if having a child’s life filmed all the time can be harmful for them. The experts had this to say on the matter.

“A child who appears on TV, reality or otherwise, is treated differently than their peers — there’s potential for a sense of entitlement, a feeling that they’re different, perhaps even better than other kids. Their expectations and needs might go unmet as they head out into the real world, hence the acting out,” says psychotherapist Jonathan Alpert.

Relationship expert, Dr. Gilda Carle agree with this statement and then added:

“The kids grew up thinking that life is a stage. On a stage, people perform for the audience, for the camera, and that is what is paramount. The kids were kicked out of school for acting out and fighting which may have been just what they were taught to do: up the ante to get applause. Filming them since birth taught them these different values, and now that they’re expected to communicate and interact authentically in a school setting, they don’t have the skills.”
