20 Celebrities On How They're Raising Their Kids Without Gender

It’s always heartwarming when fans get to see celebrities standing up for a cause. Especially when they involve their family. That’s how we know it’s near and dear to their hearts.

The latest cause that many celebs are standing up for these days is gender neutrality.

In case some are uninformed, gender neutrality is not conforming to any one gender. Parents are participating by “breaking away from the gender binary and exposing children to a variety of gender types and allowing them to explore.” This type of parenting is already all the rage in Sweden, however. Swedish parents don’t feel the need to force their children to bend to one gender or the other. This type of parenting is making the rounds in Hollywood and some big names are on board in an effort to allow their kids to be whoever they want to be.

Unfortunately, with a parenting style such as this one, there is always a group or two who feel threatened in the worst way possible. There has been backlash online about celebrities using their “power” to corrupt their young fans. And it doesn’t help that many countries are now implementing genderless bathrooms. But at the end of the day, anyone is allowed to raise their kid the way that they see fit. There is no official handbook; there is no one person who rules them all. And there is certainly no physical creator on earth to guide us through this parenting process.

What’s the worse that raising a gender-neutral child can do? Make kids more accepting, loving, and informed instead of restoring to bullying what they don’t understand?

20 Pink

Pink has always been a leader of the pack. In her own career, she took charge and didn’t fold when there was pressure on her to be a certain way. As a parent, we didn’t expect any less. The singer got very candid during an interview with People. “We are a very label-less household,” the star went on to say, “Last week Willow told me she is going to marry an African woman. I was like: 'Great, can you teach me how to make African food?'" Pink wants to always be a pillar for her daughter. She even gave her some advice we should all live by: “We help other people to change, so they can see all kinds of beauty.”

19 Zoe Saldana

via YouTube

Zoe Saldana is a mother of three boys. The actress is no stranger to her kids wanting to try on dresses or wear nail polish either. Kids have crazy imaginations and their curiosity is enviable, so she lets it run wild.

She and her husband Marco Perego show gender neutrality by switching roles. “We have a very gender neutral environment where my husband participates in a lot of tasks that were normally given to woman and vice versa.” She went on to explain. “I get to do a lot of male things, which is, I don’t know, put the TV together, fix things that break. We’re so of a very gender fluid household. I think it’s important to raise boys in that environment and girls as well.”

18 Megan Fox

Megan Fox and her husband Brian Austin Green may have some very public disagreements but when it comes to parenting, they are on the same page. When questioned about their eldest son wanting to wear nail polish and dresses, Austin clapped back in the most fatherly way as possible. “My son, he’s four,” he explained. “I’ve heard from some people that they don’t agree with him wearing dresses. To them I say, I don’t care. He’s four and if he wants to wear it then he wears it.” Green continued. “It’s his life, they’re not my clothes. … I feel like at four at five, that’s a time when he should be having fun. He’s not harming anyone wearing a dress. So if he wants to wear a dress, good on him.”

17 Gwen Stefani

via People

We couldn’t see singer Gwen Stefani being anything but a gender-neutral parent. Her style alone is eclectic and well, monkey see, monkey do. How can she very well tell her kids they can’t dress and act the way they want when both of their parents are so "out there"?

When asked about her son wearing tutus and painting his nails, Stefani had this to say. “It’s one of those things where, it’s not like I don’t think about it, but they’re used to being around me, and I’m always doing my hair, makeup, nails....” So, according to her, “It’s just normal for them.”

Well said, mama.

16 Tori Spelling

via People

After Tori Spelling’s husband Dean McDermott was criticized online for getting a full-blown pedicure with his daughter Stella, the couple took to social media to shut down haters and share their views on what their parenting style involves.

“My son Liam asked if he could get his nails done like dad, and I was thrilled. I want him to try things; I want him to think outside the box. I want him to be an individual and a free thinker. I gladly obliged him." They went on to explain that they allow him to do whatever he can conjure up in her brain. “He would get his nails done with black and yellow like Batman, or red and blue with spider webs.”

15 Amber Rose

via People

It’s no surprise that Amber Rose is on this list. She is a powerhouse when it comes to being free of shame and other people's negative vibes. The mom of one is very upfront on social media when it comes to her adorable son with Wiz Khalifa, Sebastian. She took to Instagram to share how she really feels about gender and children. “We encourage our children to paint, draw, and be creative so why block them from their creativity when it comes to self-expression? [Expletive] standards and gender roles! Let your children be great!”

Don’t get it twisted though, she will come for you if you insult her child...

14 Katie Lowes

Katie Lowes plays a complete badass on Scandal. She is essentially the new Huck. We are assuming she took some of that power with her when she stepped into motherhood. The actress is raising a son with husband Adam Shapiro and when it comes to being the best parent she can be, it involves letting her son just be whoever he wants. “My husband and I are aware, of course, that our son will be born with male parts. But we have no idea what he will identify as or what his sexual orientation will be.”

During an interview with Fit Pregnancy ahead of her baby’s birth in September, she said. “I wish, now more than ever, to just please let my son be healthy and happy and safe,” she added. “That’s all that matters.”

13 Paloma Faith

via The Sun

Singer Paloma Faith is so into gender neutrality that she still hasn’t revealed if her child is a boy or a girl. The semi-new mom told Diva magazine that she doesn’t see the need to reveal what gender her baby is. Really, it doesn’t matter as long as the baby is healthy anyway. She also added, “I won’t be dressing her children in stereotypical boy/girl colours," instead wanting them to “be who they want to be” without outside influence. The singer has always embodied a gender-neutral look herself, so her parenting style comes as no surprise to her fans.

12 Candice Swanepoel

Candice Swanepoel is now on baby number two and she did it way different this time around. She went a little out of the box and gave her son a name that not many males would have. The adorable boy is named Ariel.

The model sees nothing wrong with the name choice and she even took to social media to school a few people who criticized her choice. The new mom said that the name is actually quite traditional in Hebrew and a lot of children of Hebrew descent have this name internationally. So boom! Take that hater. It’s just a name anyway.

11 Jaime King

Actress Jaime King is a mother to two beautiful kids, she believes that gender-neutral parenting is the only way to go. In an op-ed piece she wrote for Stylecaster, the actress admits that growing up being bullied for having what is traditionally a male's name was what inspired her to raise her kids this way. She even started a gender-neutral clothing line because of her son. “My son loves pink. I look at him and he’s not one way or another. He’s just like David Bowie. He wants to wear sparkles and pink and bright, vibrant colors, and yet he’s in love with beautiful girls. But specifically, just a lover of everyone.”

10 Adele

via YouTube

How can Adele get any cooler? Oh, that’s right, by embracing her son in whatever form he comes in. When the singer/songwriter took her son to Disneyland and he wanted to dress like a princess, she received all kind of backlash from haters, of course. She brushed it off and had this to say about her growing boy. "I can’t wait to know who his best friends are going to be, who his girlfriend or his boyfriend is going to be, or what movies he likes. Whatever my kid wants to do or be I will always support him no matter what."

9 Angelina Jolie

via Mirror

Angelina Jolie kind of spearheaded this moment a few years back when she allowed Shiloh to wear suits and cut her hair in a manner that most would say are for boys. Jolie eventually got real about her daughter to Vanity Fair in 2010. "She wants to be a boy," Jolie told Vanity Fair in 2010. "So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys’ everything." She went on to say, “You don’t know who your children are until they show you who they are." It’s safe to say she is completely fine with Shiloh “dressing as a boy” as long as she's happy.

8 Bryce Dallas Howard

Bryce Dallas Howard lets her daughter’s gender neutrality show through her clothing and physical appearance. Dallas Howard told People magazine that for the longest time her daughter was bald, so gender was never really a problem. And now that Beatrice is older, Dallas Howard looks at it this way: "I really wanted to wait for her to lead me in a certain direction.” And now, Dallas Howard said, “She’s just [dressing] the way she wants to dress.” She is letting her daughter choose whatever feels natural to her. Isn’t that what every parent should be doing? The world is hard enough to live in so why make it worse?

7 Majandra Delfino

via Bustle

Roswell star Majandra Delfino and her actor husband David Walton share a daughter who they encourage to be whoever she wants to be. They put her in ballet and let her play with trucks — there is nothing wrong with liking both. The actress told People magazine that she wants her daughter to be well-rounded and experience childhood without society telling her what she can and can’t do. “I felt like the world was going to do that so much to her." She wanted to shield her from all the negative. "Let’s try to save this house from too much of it, ’cause she will find it herself.”

6 Russell Brand

via Us Weekly

After Russell Brand and Katy Perry broke up, he ended up having a child. A daughter no less and it really instilled something in him. The comedian who is normally nonchalant and cavalier about everything was all of a sudden a protective parent.

On the Jonathan Ross Show, he said, “I may not even impose a gender upon it, let the child grow up and be whatever the hell it is.” He continued to say. I have re-evaluated the way that I unconsciously looked at gender because now I've got a daughter I think 'wow, I don't necessarily need to dress her in clothes that are indicative of her gender." Smart man.

5 Will Smith

via E! News

Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith have been accused of letting their children run wild around Hollywood but we all know this isn’t the case. They have also been accused by a few church websites of using their kids to corrupt other kids into being gender-neutral. Ah, okay. That just sounds crazy. Will eventually responded by saying, "The world is going to keep bashing me for whatever I do, and I'm going to keep not caring.”

During an interview with NYLON magazine, he said, "Jaden is 100 percent fearless. He will do anything, you know? So as a parent, it’s scary. It’s really terrifying," Will said on BBC Radio last year. "But he is completely willing to live and die by his own artistic decisions and he just doesn’t concern himself with what people think.”

4 Mila Kunis

via YouTube

Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher already dedicated their parenting styles to a strict method “not raising [expletives].” However, the power couple has also dedicated their parenting style to allowing their kids be who they want to be. The two parents are prime examples of funny, open, and honest people who are accepting and loving, so we can’t see how their kids could turn out any different. The couple even gave their daughter a gender neutral name, Wyatt. Kunis acknowledges that growing up in Hollywood has given her a broader mind and has made her a more open person. So now, her job is to make that rub off on her kids.

3 Charlize Theron

via lj-top.ru

Charlize Theron got a lot of flack for dressing her son like Elsa from Frozen. However, many people have gotten this wrong, and if you have a child, you know that at a certain age YOU—the parent—don’t control how they dress. Her son probably kicked and screamed to be able to dress like Elsa that day and every good parent knows you should choose your battle. Theron even addressed the fact on Jimmy Kimmel, stating that her son is in love with princess Elsa and what she stands for. He loved the film Frozen and just wants to dress that way.

2 Tobey Maguire

via YouTube

During a lunch date with the kids, Tobey Maguire and Ex-wife Jennifer Meyer were chastised for letting their son wear what looked to be girls clothing: a crop top and tights with bright colors. However, the couple stood their ground an didn’t even bat an eye when news reports started to pour out on this topic. And why should they? The way they choose to allow their child to express himself is no one’s business. Maguire stated that all that matters to him is making his kids a priority. If they are healthy and happy then who cares? The two stand solid when it comes to their kids.

1 Jennifer Lopez

via YouTube

Jennifer Lopez uses gender-neutral pronouns when she refers to her sister's kid and now her kids. The actress, singer, hot mama, and girlfriend took to Instagram and wrote.

“This is Brendan my sister Leslie’s second child!!. They were the one person selected to represent their school at #GlobalYoungLeadersConference in Washington DC!!! And I couldn’t be more proud!!! Brendan is strong and smart and loving and obviously a leader!! Titi Jenn loves you!! #SuperProudAuntie.”

She was totally cool about it and didn't even release a statement saying why she did it. She was praised by media outlets and organizations for stepping up and spreading the world without really spreading the word.
