From the beginning, it has been clear that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, were going to live life their own way. In the last few years, the couple has made clear their desire to leave a mark on the world beyond just being royals. The couple has announced that they are shifting their focuses and taking a "step back" from their regular royal duties.

In an Instagram post, Harry and Meghan explain, "After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution." Already, they are involved with more progressive charities and non-profits. You can look at Harry's meetings about climate change with Dr. Jane Goodall, and Meghan's work with women as a starting point.

Not only will they be stepping back as "senior members of the Royal Family," the couple will also "work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen." Financial independence from the royal family will allow the couple, parents to son Archie, to have more flexibility in their lives. This means more duties outside of the family for sure.

"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages," the added. It's no secret that the British press has not been kind of Meghan, which prompted Harry to very publicly support his wife against them. Several months ago, the Duke spoke out about their "ruthless" treatment of his wife. Afterward, speculation of the couple leaving their UK with their young son began. Many people believe they will return to Canada, which is where Meghan lived when the couple first began dating. This means she will also be closer to her mother, who has spent a lot of time supporting the couple.

Splitting their time between North America and the United Kingdom will also allow them to "raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter," they note. They also mention that they're starting a new charitable entity.

"We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties," they add. So nothing is happening right away, but they've already begun the transition.

Frankly, we can't wait to see what comes next for them family.
